Help with google translate app

Hi. Didn't know where else to ask this, so I am doing so here.

I have installed google translate on my 32 bit ios ipad.

I want it to be able to translate things I have my camera pointed at.

I arrive at a screen with three icons on the bottom. The middle icon is a camera, circled with a big red dot (presumably meaning no access). Above it in the middle of the screen is an icon circled in green, that says "allow access."

Clicking on that button takes me to the Photo and Camera section of my settings. There doesn't appear to be a button there for permitting programs to access your camera. So, I am stuck.

Was really hoping to use this app on my trip to Europe in about a week.

Multiple searches on the internet suggest most people don't have this issue. It appears clicking on the allow access button simply allows access, rather than taking you to the settings.

Any suggestions?

Have you tried going to Settings > Privacy > Camera and seeing if the app has permission to access your camera there?

Try going to settings, then down to choose the translate app. It should show you an option to allow camera access when using the app.

The first comment addressed my issue. Not that the program itself was giving me any hints. Thanks!

apple is like that.

Hate it and love it.

There actually is a user guide to the iPad (and other i-devices) in the Apple Library. I keep a widget on the notification screens, right at the bottom, to scroll down to if I get stuck. Once you are digging around it isn't the best either. hey ho. That's apple.

Also, if you go to the web browser version of Google Translate - both a good app and a good Chrome extension - you can get help from Google. Again, with Google, you have to put in the spade work.

When you get happy with Google Translate, you may find that you get better results by taking a photo and letting the app loose on that than just doing the augmented reality bit. If your iPad moves even a little as it is computing you may get garbage.

Good luck with it - once you have tamed it you will have a very valuable app.

Happy travels
