Help - We cancelled our 2-week Maui trip because of the disaster.

We have 3 weeks to plan and coordinate another trip. We are looking for a similar situation where we'd have a single basecamp near the beach with the ability to go from there and back for day trips. Considering Spain, Portugal, France, and Italy. We like natural wonders, Castles, Wine tasting, historic bucket list places to see. Having an Airport close by with rental car to get around would be easier than planes, trains, and buses but we've done that before.

I haven’t done beach time at any of those places, just wanted to state that Kauai is beautiful and has amazing day trips to Waimea Canyon, etc.

We had to plan a last minute trip in 2018 when wildfires shut down Philmont Scout Ranch. It was hard to put together but ultimately an amazing trip, best of luck!

Kauai is a good recommendation. It is a bit more relaxing. Not as tourist as the other island. But I would be inclined just to stay out of the area until later. Our TGiving plans are on hold but we might go back to Maui. It just depends on recovery. Not everything burned and they do need the tourist dollar and to maintain some jobs for the survivors.

I haven't been there, but some people say that the Azores are like an Atlantic/Portuguese version of Hawaii.

Accept for Maui which is off limits, the Hawaiian government is saying that the rest of the islands are open for business.

Just checking that you know about the record heat in the areas you are describing this summer?

I am going to suggest The Adriatic, specifically Croatia and Slovenia. You could have a wonderful trip here with gorgeous beaches.

I would scout lodging first - sounds like this would be in September and a cursory look at Google flights suggests plane tickets are not too bad. Finding a nice place for 2 weeks may be a bit more difficult.

There’s excellent wine in Southern France and history too (Arles, Avignon for example). Finding a good beach base maybe not so easy - haven’t looked myself there.
