I did not get any warm fuzzies from the responses to the hotel I picked - so I upped my budget and these are the hotels that are 5 stars that came up - in February - for the $99 to $140 price range: Esplanade Thalia 3 Storks Best Western Premier Hotel Royal Palace Crowne Plaza Prague Castle Rezidence Lundborg Metamorphis Excellent Savoy Jalta
... Are any of these a place you all would recommend? We would like to see a concert at the National and be able to walk back at night without going through seedy areas. I have a four star booked right now - U Zlateho Stromu - but not sure the night club below (w/ drunk stags) is a good place for two girls to be walking through at night - so I am open to advice. Thanks!
I don't know anything about the hotels that you listed, or their locations, or who/what gave them 5 stars, so I can't comment in that respect. When we visited Prague several years ago, we stayed at Hotel Antik, which is located on Dlouha 22. It's about a block from Old Town Square, and I felt the area was safe, even at night (I'm a small female on the upside of my 40s). Old Town Square itself, I felt, was safe even at night, though it had quite a few stag parties stumbling through. As I recall, the area on Narodni, which is the street that the National Theatre is on, was not the safest-looking place. One night, after attending a black light theatre, we went for coffee and dessert at Café Restaurant Louvre, at Národní trída 22. I remember, and noted in my trip diary, that the area did not seem safe or nice as we left, probably around 11 pm. I was glad to be back closer to Old Town Square. We were walking from the cafe, and it was me, my husband and our 12yo son; none of us very imposing. Hope the anecdotal information helps.
Patty, We stayed at the Kozna 6 apartments of Arcadia Residence last September and would return in a heartbeat. Safe and secure location. Yes, do check it out on Trip Advisor.
All the positives are true!
Hi Patty, I've not stayed at any of the hotels on your list, but I've been to Prague a couple of times and must say I've never felt unsafe. Yes, Prague does seem to attract groups of people celebrating hen/stag parties - and some celebrating with copious amounts of alcohol - but I've never felt threatened or dubious of my surroundings. The scope of my comments include walking around Old Town, the castle side, and New Town during the day and night. Your original hotel (U Zlateho Stromu) is in an excellent location, but with the nightclub downstairs the only thing I'd be concerned about is noise. Getting to/from the National Theatre from there is a breeze, you would basically follow the well-lit sidewalk by the river and it would take about 10 minutes. Even if you didn't take the riverwalk you could zig and zag right through Old Town, where, even in February, there are likely to be lots of people out enjoying themselves. Regardless, I've not had the experience that Lexma has had on Narodni (the main east/west street by the theatre), and I didn't feel the area to be seedy or threatening at all. On our last trip we stayed at the Residence Retezova (www.retezova.com; found in Rick's book) and we loved the room and the location on a quiet side street just off the Charles Bridge. In fact, it's only a block from your original hotel. We were there this past March and found their rates to be very "soft," and negotiated a rate for the Rio de Janeiro room well under what was advertised. The room was on two floors, with a kitchenette/tv upstairs and the bedroom, nice bathroom downstairs. The bedroom also had a sliding door to the interior courtyard, but you'd likely not use it during February! Either way you decide, I hope you have a great trip!
I can say that I've stayed at the 3 Storks. It's nice an very contemporary. We paid for the most upscale room with a "view to the castle". But our upscale room, even though very large, was actually in the attic. Our window with a "view to the castle" was actually just a little dormer window that was very small. I think other less expensive rooms had bigger windows. We've also stayed at the Hotel Ventana which is right on Old Town Square - it was also extremely nice with huge rooms. If I ever go again I will be staying at the Arcadia Residence in their Old Town Apartments. They consistently get excellent reviews on Tripadvisor.
Prague is generally safe city. Just watch for pickpockets. Hotels we stayed, we considered them and location safe: Andante, Antik, Betlem Club, Kafka, U Suteru. All centrally located.
I stayed at Hotel Lida,it's a couple blocks from the public transportation. I believe it was uphill going and downhill coming back, so we got our exercise-but better that way than the other! The owner did have us park our car in a garage a few blocks away, but I felt it was safe there esp as they put it right by the guard box. The homes in the area did have tall fences around them but the owner said it was safe, but we really didn't walk around the area, we were downtown more. The Hotel was nice, good breakfast, great owner with helpful information, and less that $140-at least it was in 2002. Recommended by Rick.
Patty, my husband and I have stayed twice at Cloister Inn on Konvictska. It was a very nice hotel, and in revisiting their website tonight I see they renovated in 2009; it looks even nicer! I plugged in the dates of Feb 22-26; it's 69 Euro/double occupancy, and 74 Euro for Fri night the 25th... When we were there - both times - they had a huge breakfast buffet, a hotel shuttle to the train station, free as I remember it (nice touch), and the location was great - just a few blocks from 'the action' but away from the hordes of people. We had two favorite places to eat nearby, and attended concerts in churches just around the corner. It was probably the nicest hotel we've ever stayed at in Europe, and we've been traveling there for nearly 13 years...Please Google the name and check out their website! The price is fantastic for the calliber of hotel. I don't think you'll be disappointed!
