Other than box film cameras or buying an inexpensive digital, you would have to repair yours, which probably won't happen in a matter of hours.

Can someone from home ship you one at your next destination?

Dawn, That's terrible. Yes, you can easily buy a camera in Avignon. Also, pick up Lots of Postcards as sometimes they have scenes you wont be able to catch.

I went to a wonderful photo place in Avignon last summer. I have looked and looked but cannot find the name. However, I can tell you excatly where it is.
If you are on the rue de la Republique (main drag), and going in t he direction toward the Place de la Horloge and the Papal Palace, it is on a side street on your left. It is a few blocks up from the TI. AS I remember you can see it from Republique when you look down the street. It is on the left side of that side street and is a very modern place doing film developing,CGS, etc. as well as selling cameras. The young man I dealt with spoke very good English and their service was extremnely good.

Or you could just ask at the very good TI on
Republique. Since you will be spending quite a bit, see if you can get a tax refund (tax is approx. 19.5 % included in the price). If you can get it, you have to submit the form at your point of departure from the EU.

Good luck!

Dawn, I suspect you'll be able to buy a new Camera when you arrive in Avignon. It will probably be supplied with a Euro Charger, so be sure to check the Input Voltage to make sure the Charger will also work in the U.S. (the Input Voltage should be 100-240 VAC). If a "world" charger IS supplied, you'll need to use a Plug Adapter to charge the Camera in the U.S.

Of course, if you can find the same brand and model of Camera as your present one, you can use your present Charger and keep the Euro Charger for future trips. Buying the same type of Camera means it will also use the same type of Memory Cards.

I had a similar problem when I was in Hawaii in February. The Hotel staff was able to provide information on nearby Camera stores, which was a big help.

Good luck!

What will the Customs on a new camera be? Just don't forget to declare it on your way back.

I had to replace a camera on one trip.

I expected to just bring home postcards but found a really good deal on a new camera. Hopefully it won't be too bad with the weak dollar.

Depending on what type of camera you are looking for, you should be under the $800 personal exemption from duty (can be combined with other personal exemptions for your family if you need more).

You should declare it. Even if you have to pay some duty when you get back, it's better to decalare it. If you don't, you risk having it seized. I really don't think it's worth it.

Thank you eveyone. When I arrived in Paris 3 weeks ago, I discovered my daughter had left her cameras memory card. There I found the store named "FNAC"! Again today I found this same store on the main steet in Avignon. It appears to be the France version of Best Buy! I bought a great camera (that fits the "new" memory card I bought and only had to pay $179.00 Euro. Life is good and we will have photos of our trip to Provence.
