For those that travel with the iPad, the new iPad 2 was released today! It's apparently thinner and lighter than the original, and the features on the new model look fantastic! I suspect there will be an increasing number of travellers adding an iPad 2 to their packing list in the near future. I haven't watched the Keynote address yet, but I believe the release even pulled Steve J. away from his medical issues for the day. Cheers!
Announced today, not released until next Friday March 11 at 5 PM. Same pricing, same size, available in either white or black bezel, dual cameras, faster, available on AT&T and Verizon.
I "watched" as it was taking place today. I like what I saw. I believe it will be able to replace my netbook, ipod touch and kindle when traveling.
iPad!
IWANTONE!!! Thinner, lighter...and the covers come in such pretty colors. ;-) What's not to like? Does the iPad use the same charger as an iPod Touch?
The iPad uses the same cable but a different charging block than the iPhone.
It looks like the Chargepod multi-charger will charge the Ipad.
Today's iPad looked OK to me, but I wasn't especially impressed with the new/better stuff. Built-in cameras? Meh, I'll be bringing a couple real cameras anyway, and would never use the built-ins. A little thinner and lighter is always nice, but my original iPad is wonderfully thin and light already - 1/3 thinner and a quarter pound lighter is not enough of a difference to me. Faster is always good, but it's not like I'm doing video editing on the thing - I've never really encountered a situation where a "faster" iPad would have made any difference. I prefer the black case over the white. So I think I'll stick with my iPad 1.0 for a while - I'm very happy with it, and it makes an awesome travel computer for the things I want. If I didn't already own one, then I'd be tempted by one of the new ones, of course. OTOH, all the rumors suggest there will be a more significant iPad revision in the fall. That's when I'll probably gift my existing one to my wife, and spring for the iPad 3. By the way, my wife, who is generally not a fan of computer games, is totally addicted to Carcassonne, which I must admit is a really great game (and would probably appeal to many Ricknics). So she'll be happy when I upgrade to the iPad 3 in the fall (so she can play Carcassonne any time she wants without having to fight me for the iPad...).
I agree with David. 1.0 is so fast, how much faster do you need to go for email, surfing, etc....?
I want one because I don't already have one. I was holding off to see what the new version would be like. That's the problem with electronics...you buy something and by the following week, month, etc., something better comes along! I wouldn't use the camera to take pictures necessarily, but you can do face-to-face or whatever they call the Skype-like feature.
If you are considering the new iPad2, keep in mind that the IPad original is now $100 less at Best Buy. ($399 for the least expensive one) If you want the faster processer, and the 2 cameras so you can face time, get the new one, if you were holding off on the iPad totally, might be a good time to grab the older version! The camera on the Ipad will not be a replacement for a camera. they are there so you can facetime....Apple's Skype. personally, I've been waiting for this version, and NO, I don't need it, so I'm going to hold my horses and plan to get one before my next over seas trip. I'm so tired of email on my iphone, just too small! I'd get the iPad just to use as a computer, surf the web, do email, and maybe facetime as well. I already have NOOK reader and love it, so I don't think I'd be reading book on the ipad, but that being said, I'd let my husband use the iPad so he doesn't have to drag 4-5 books with him on the next trip...
I purchased the Rick Steve's power adapters and was wondering if they will work with the iPad 2? I think that all I need is a power adapter and not the power converter. And, if I can use the Rick Steve's adapters, I hopefully won't have to purchase the Apple World's Traveler Kit for $40 http://store.apple.com/us/product/MB974ZM/B any suggestions?
You don't need any converter. All you need is an adapter for the plug shape. Your iPad will be perfectly happy sipping European electricity, and it won't care if your plug adapter came from Rick Steves, Steve Jobs, or K-Mart.
