Have iPad, will travel...

Here are some of the apps I've installed to help with upcoming trips. I'm curious about any others people here have found useful.

AIR

  • Kayak
  • Hipmunk
  • Skyscanner
  • Vueling

LODGING

  • Airbnb
  • VRBO
  • TripAdvisor

DRIVING

  • ViaMichelin
  • Google Maps/Earth

TRAINS

?

COMMUNICATING

  • Skype
  • FaceTime

NOTES & PHOTOS-- ORGANIZING / SHARING

?

TripIt looks like it might be a good organizer, but I think Concur's primarily business-focused.

Also, I'm wondering if anyone's found a good/great app for planning trips. Ideally it would include 1) base itineraries one could build from, 2) awareness of time needed to travel between places, and to allot to different activities ("Uffizi in an hour? Really?") and 3) Events/Dates to know about ("You're *sure** you want to be in Rome on Easter Sunday?*")

Kind of like the guidebooks in interactive format. (RS-- you listening? ;)

Thanks all

Weather. I have Wunderground and Yahoo! Weather. You can add locations. Also. All my Kindle content is on my iPad. All those books come in handy when traveling. Travel books can be added. I have the app for my bank so I can do my banking online. To keep up on travel news I have the Rick Steve's app. I have apps for booking.com and hotels.com. And very important, a couple of solitaire games.

JoeC,

A few other Apps you could consider.....

AIR

  • Airline Apps: some of the airlines have their own Apps, which I tend to use more than the consolidator sites (although I do have Hipmunk). A couple of the Apps I use are Air Canada, Alaska Air and EasyJet.
  • Seat Guru and Gate Guru

LODGING

  • Using the Safari Browser, I sometimes bookmark the websites for hotels I'll be using on a particular trip.

TRAINS

  • DB Navigator
  • SBB Mobile
  • Paris Metro, London Tube or Apps for the local transportation in whichever cities you'll be visiting

COMMUNICATING

  • Dialing Codes App (I've found the App useful on a couple of occasion when calling within Europe)

NOTES & PHOTOS - ORGANIZING, SHARING

  • Camera Awesome (for those that use SmugMug Photo Sharing)
  • TravelPod (for those that use the TravelPod Blogging site)
  • Camera+ (fantastic App for iPhone or iPad - provides numerous ways to enhance and improve photos - this is the Camera I use most often on my iPhone)

OTHER APPS

  • Currency Converter (there are lots of them on the App store - XE is one of the most popular, but I've been using fxChange for the iPhone)
  • Language dictionaries or Translators: again, there are lots of choices - Google Translate is one of the most popular, but you could also look at Jibbigo which is a speech-to-speech translator.

Happy travels!

I use over 200 apps between my iPhone and my android tab. Many of those have to do with travel and holidays. I'll share plenty but it would be very helpful to have a hint of where you are contemplating travel.

For example, if traveling in England, I use about 20 different apps for travel, trains, car travel, hotels etc.

In Italy Pronto Treno is a good app for Italian trains, .italo treno does not yet have one, and there are several good apps for Rome, both for tourism and local transport.

I have similar resources in Germany, fewer in France.

Please share where you would like to be.

Great thread! Thanks to all for their contributions. I have some of these but some are new to me and I am happy to have them. Nigel, do you have suggestions for Germany? We'll be there for a month this summer and we always travel with iPads and Surfaces.

Mary, I have a pad but I have never taken it to Europe as I like the real keyboard on my netbook for all the typing I do, mainly posting my travels on my own website.

For rail travel in Germany (or the rest of Europe, for that matter) you really should have the DB (Deutsche Bahn = German Rail) Navigator to look up rail schedules.

For accommodations, the best method I have found for finding accommodations in a particular town is the town's own website, usually www.town_name.de (.de for Germany). Commercial booking websites (Booking.com, HRS.com, etc) don't ever seem to have as many choices, particularly the small, more intimate, and less expensive places. TripAdvisor might be good to check reviews once you've found a place, but I've found examples of bad reviews for the wrong locations, so I don't know how much they can be trusted.

For Germany I use

Aldi - for a very inexpensive but very tasty supermarket.

Lidl - for another very inexpensive but very tasty supermarket, it has a sub-app for each country it operates in.

via Michelin (and the other Michelin apps in the same family) for excellent traffic and routing info - works like the website but better and easier

booking.com, accor, ibis, holiday inn express, marriott, tripadvisor - all for hotels if I'm not going the Lee route (which I often do do and which generally provides good results)

Converter+ which converts distances, weights, currency, and dozens of other conversions. I've never stumped it.

Dropbox because I use Dropbox everywhere

DB Navigator and its friend DB Tickets - mentioned above

Tripadvisor City Guides

Lonely Planet

Rick Steves Audio Europe

Stau Mobil - if driving can save hours

http://www.bayerninfo.de/ and the bayerninfo Maps app for the best traffic views in the southeast including live cameras on the autobahns - for android and iPhone, may not work with the iPad

http://www.reiseplanung.de/default.aspx good information throughout Germany for stau and construction - road works

http://www.staubericht.com/ for excellent stau information. It also contains (and offers for free a link to) the fabulous Stau-o-Meter

google translate app - for obvious reasons

NavFree Germany for free (but BIG) sat nav GPS - keep it plugged in if you want any battery left

skype - because it works, almost always

BBC weather and the Weather Channel and Weather Underground - for similar but different weather reports

Have a Happy visit to Germany...
