Hats in Italy

I am wondering if it is appropriate to wear a very wide-brimmed hat in Italy, or if something like a baseball cap kind of thing would be better. I do not want to "stand out" for someone to steal my things. Should I not wear a hat with a huge brim?

Sasha - wear what you want and what will keep you comfortable. It's likely you'll still recognized as a non-local anyway. I just pulled up some shots of Piazza San Marco from the top loggia at the front of the basilica. There were folks with bare heads mostly (standing in the midday sun, not wise IMHO), there were ball caps as well as straw hats with wide brims and hats like Tilley hats.

When I was in Provence I bought a hat as I'd forgotten one. And then it turned out to be made in Italy. So, the advantages of my Italian, French hat was that it could rolled up and carried in a purse or bag easily. It was a broad brim so covered face and the back of the neck. It was hot and the sun was very strong and I was glad to have that hat.

Wide brimmed hats are a good choice to limit Sun/UV Ray exposure. Ball caps won't give you the same protection. (I'm not sure if that was a concern or not, but I thought I'd mention it just the same...)

I don't think a hat with a huge brim will make you stand out to the point where someone would "steal your things". Just take precautions and be aware of your surroundings.

If you're comfortable with a huge brimmed hat, go for it if that's your own personal style...but you probably will get noticed...both at home and away.

Why not go middle of the road with a slightly less than HUGE brimmed hat?LOL!

I wore a baseball cap while in Venice since the weather was chilly. Until someone else pays for your trip, wear what's comfortable.

sasha, not wearing a hat will not make you look like a local, but it may give you sunstroke, so wear a hat if you want to.
I rarely wear a hat at home, but, at home it is not so hot,, I melt in heat, so I am bringing a small hat that I can pull out of my purse and plop on my head if I am stuck in a line in the sun for an hour. I am not into getting a sick headache just to look good. I do not look good vomiting anyways.
