Hat for a bald guy on the continent?

What kind of hats do guys wear in Europe, if any? I am a bald guy (terribly handsome by the way!) and don't want to wear the standard baseball cap on my trip later this spring, as I am sure that screams out "American tourist." Still, I need to protect the old skull from sunburn on the days I am out and about and the sun is a shining. Thanks!

Plenty of people in Europe where a hat with a visor (golf hat, baseball cap, etc.) when out in the sun. Just skip the logo and take it off when you are inside.

I have not seen many baseball caps or bill capson anyone but tourists and some teens. I have a similar problem so use a crushable, cotton canvas wide brim hat. I do see a few brim hats on older local type folks. If it is cool, just light weight knit cap.

I'm bald as can be on top. I've traveled for months (over the years) in Italy and southern France in a Tilly hat. Full sun protection comes before looks. If you're mature enough to be bald, you've mature enough to not care if you look like you're still 20. Enjoy the portable shade.

Get a baseball type hat in the country you are visiting, perhaps with the national sports team on it. That way, you have a great souvenir at the end of your trip. Men do wear baseball type hats, but not usually with American teams on them.

You can also go with a beret ala Jamie from Mythbusters, or a British type driving or golfing cap.

Or there's the British white hankie on the head.

My husband bought a straw hat from the local market. It was much cooler than a bb cap and looked good./

I take both a lightweight Tilley and an Ivy-style cap. Both of these are "crushable" because it is convenient to be able to pack them in my luggge. The former I wear for more casual times and the latter for "dressier." Fishing-style caps are popular in many areas. Consider taking a cap of your choice and also buying one in Europe. One of my favorites is a lightweight leather Ivy-style cap I bought in Florence.

Haven't been replying much lately, but this question calls to me! :-) I ride the U-bahn to and from work everyday --plus I'm in the center of the city-- and one thing I like is that the range of hats that men wear is incredible. Especially in winter. I see French berets, Russian fur caps, lots of newsboy caps, Fedoras, ski caps and, yes, baseball caps too. When I moved over here, I was not really a hat wearer but the old saying really is true "if your feet are cold, put on a hat". Anyway, I think in the States there is a tendency to frown on men for being vane or pretentious if they wear anything more elaborate than a baseball cap. That is definitely not the case over here. You will receive no snide comments no matter what you wear on your head. In the winter I wear a fedora with my suit and long coat. On weekends I'll more likely wear a Basque beret that I can stuff in my coat pocket. In summer, if I'm in the city, I have a panama that I bought in Rome. If I'm just in our neighborhood or the surrounding woods and vineyards, a baseball cap is fine. Baseball caps will not necessarily label you as a tourist ---everyone wears them, especially younger people. Elsewhere people have suggested buying hats locally. Straw hats are often available in the summer. If you see a baseball cap with the local soccer/football team logo on it, that makes a nice souvenir. So go ahead and wear whatever meets your fancy, so long as it is weather-appropriate. No one will raise an eyebrow.
