I posted this to Technology Tips last week but didn't get much of a response, so I'm posting it here. Google Maps now works on a smartphone with real-time, turn-by-turn directions even when you are offline. I've tried it in the States and it works really well. My question is, has anyone tried it for real-time driving directions in Europe when they were offline? Also, does the app know to give your directions in kilometers instead of miles, or do you have to reconfigure your settings? Thanks for your help.
Hi T, I recently returned from England where I used Google Maps online (enabled my phone) and offline (I was worried for those areas where I would be a little far from civilization). Both worked perfectly. My directions were all given in miles, I believe everything can be configured how you would like in settings. I did run into an issue where the offline map came in handy. The issue with offline maps as you are probably well aware is that it takes up a lot of memory so you'd probably do best loading the map of the day each evening beforehand and then deleting after you don't need it anymore. Can't say enough good things about Google Maps; its my go-to at home and abroad. Have a great trip, wherever you are headed.
Thanks for your reply Andrea. I too find Google Maps amazing to use offline here in the States. Good to know that it also works great in Europe offline. It does eat up memory and also power, so I always have my phone connected to the car charger when I use it. My guess is that a lot of people will avoid renting a GPS unit and just go with Google Maps now that it works so well.
As an English person, I don't use Google maps when travelling. Co Pilot is much better and uses less memory. Google maps have many inaccuracies.
