According to their website, your carryon must be 22x10x18 including wheels and handle. My suitcase is just 1 inch taller because of the spinner wheels. Does anyone have any experience with BA and how strict they are in upholding this policy?? I really hope they won't make me check in my carry on.
Hope is a dangerous thing and usually leads to disappointment. Sizes are specified based on the depth of the overhead bins. Just because somebody else slipped through doesn't mean you will. I'd either comply or count on checking it. If you don't have to, take it as a lucky bonus.
I flew from Baltimore to Munich back in May. I saw a lot of people board with bags I thought would never make it through. Unless the carry-on was ungodly huge they really did not seem to care. I doubt you will have an issue because of your wheels.
We (a family of 4) flew BA to Switzerland 2 months ago. I measured our bags in advance to make sure they were 22" or less. When we checked in at the counter, the agent asked to see our bags, lined up and standing on the floor, and she looked at them carefully. She thought one looked a bit thick so she asked us to repack it to make it flatter. I imagine the agents know that bags with spinner wheels are over 22". If anyone looks at your bag during the check-in they would notice at that point. I had the impression from the way they inspected out bags that they are enforcing the policy, at least at our airport (SeaTac).
Up until recently, enforcement seemed to be a lot stricter at Heathrow coming back than going over at BA's counter at Seattle. But, my daughter reported that she got stopped from bringing her wheelie onboard this past June[INVALID]and this was one that had been used before on the Seatac to Heathrow run without a problem. Enforcement of carry-on rules seems like the quintessential example of a situation where you need recent, local information, since the strictness or laxity of enforcement varies from airport to airport and from one time to the next.
I fly BA all the time and they are generally ok about it so long as it isn't noticeably oversized. However they get much stricter about it if a flight is full because they don't actually have enough locker space for everyone to have a full sized carry on, so they reduce the dimensions and make you check it in. My case is about 1cm too big in each direction and I have never been asked to check it in though.
Just returned last night from a trip on BA - total of 4 legs. We travelled with only carry-on luggage, and I find the BA allowance (especially the "personal item") to be very generous. I always check the allowances by each carrier for my trip, so I made sure our carry-ons met BA's dimensions. On 3 of the 4 legs of our trip, no one even looked (at least in obvious fashion) at our luggage. But on one leg, the check-in agent looked at our baggage (somewhat quickly) and said "you're fine". You may or may not get stopped due to the extra 1". But I'll bet that your extra 1" will make it impossible to store your suitcase length-ways into the overhead bin, meaning you will need to turn it sideways, thereby robbing some other passenger of some storage space. And on full flights these days, storage space is precious.
Got back from Europe last week with BA. I have the samsonite 22" (without the wheels) silhouette 11 spinner carry on. No problem with it both with the international and domestic flights with BA.
