Has Anyone Done a Celtic Nations trip?

My husband and I would like to take a trip that includes the "7 Celtic nations" - Ireland, Scotland, Wales, Cornwall, Isle of Man, the Brittany area of France and the Galicia area of Spain. If anyone has taken such a trip, we'd appreciate your sharing itinerary and travel tips. Thanks!

I've at worked at all of the places you list with split emphasis on celts and earlier prehistory. Cumulatively I've got a good couple of years in the areas, but a fair chunk of the time was ordinary goofing off. I don't think I'd have the stamina to make it all in one tour since, just to scratch the surface, you're looking at minimally three months. Not only that, I'd get tired of working on only one subject spread over that big an area for that long a time. The logical sequence, logistically, is Ireland, UK, France, and Spain (or the reverse). You're going to need a car in each major area (and you can't move one between RoI/NI and Great Britain). You'll need to decide how far back into the late bronze age you figure the celts were involved - - opinions vary. There's going to be a lot of tromping and hiking - - take sturdy shoes and clothing. Once out of the RoI and the UK, don't figure on any accomodations that you'll find in a guidebook. A good place to start digging for information is Ian Barnes' "The Historical Atlas of the Celtic World" - - it's not light reading. Angus Konstam has one by the same name without the 'the' - - don't ask me how that works. Don't bother to buy it. The National Museum in Cardiff has some pretty good stuff on celts in Wales. In fact, it's one of the better museums that I've ever seen. Warning: it's going to be easy to get side-tracked (Welsh castles, Carnac stones, etc.)

Thanks, Ed. I know you're right - it will be easy to get sidetracked! Sidetracks have made some our most enjoyable memories. We're thinking of concentrating on music for this trip, planning dates around concerts and festivals. I'm curious about your comment about not driving between UK/Northern Ireland/Republic of Ireland. Something must have changed since our last trip to the UK, when we rented a car in Glasgow and ferried to Belfast, then drove all around both NI and the Republic, then ferried back for more time in Scotland.

Regarding the car, then I'm dumb. Explored it a bunch of times and thought it couldn't be done - - to the point of once leaving a car at Holyhead (maybe Fishguard?), ferrying to RoI, renting another one while the original sat on the dock in Wales for a week. Music I know nothing about.

Galicia is not the only area of Spain where there were Celts. Asturias is actually the only area of Spain never conquered by the Moors. They are Celts as well.

What about Germany! Lots of Celtic stuff here. Just north of Frankfurt in Glauburg, they have just opened a new museum last month highlighting the Celtic discoveries in this area. I have been to the massive burial mound here and it is quite impressive. Even the city forest in Frankfurt has revealed dozens and dozens of burials. One of my friends has been on lots of Bronze Age, Celtic digs down in Bavaria too. http://www.keltenwelt-glauberg.de/ http://www2.iath.virginia.edu/Barbarians/Sites/Glauberg/Glauberg_main.html
