Has a favorite hotel/B&B been deciding factor in revisiting a city?

I know this sounds like a strange question. We have just returned from a five week trip, starting in Beaune, France and ending in Brugge, Belgium. Two of the B&B's we stayed in were so wonderful, hubby and I both agree we would go back to the cities, just to stay there again.

Now we're starting to think about next year's trip and I'm wondering if any of you have such favorites. Not sure where we're going. Thinking somewhere that would include Vienna and Budapest. You never know, your favorite B&B might help us decide.

Our two favorites were: Fonte Martino Guest House in Montepulciano and Huis Koning in Brugge.

Looking forward to your replies.

Absolutely! Although funnily enough, none of the ones that make me dream of going back are in Europe.

My absolute most favorite B&Bs so far in life are probably:

  • Chaya B&B in Mexico City: rooftop views and hammocks, incredibly delicious breakfasts, fabulous location
  • La Tangerina in Tangier, Morocco: The decor, the atmosphere, the radios playing jazz and classical music, the rooftop terrace views, the private dinners - just impeccable!
  • Finca Mystica on Ometepe Island in Nicaragua: I don't even know how to describe this place - completely gorgeous!

I am looking forward to this thread so that I can get some ideas myself! It was funny to realize I have so few accommodations in Europe that seem that memorable to me.

Actually one of my favorite hotel/B&B experiences was in Budapest. Unfortunately they are no longer in operation. It was run by two American guys, one of whom wrote the Frommer's guide to Budapest, so they were obviously very well informed. They had a flat with three bedrooms and rented two of them out as a B&B. I think it was the least expensive yet one of the nicest places I've ever stayed. So I don't think it's a strange question at all. I do have other favorites - one is a large hotel in Milan that has an amazing breakfast buffet. I am only half kidding when I say I go back to Milan just to stay at that hotel (have been several there several times, but honestly there were other reasons besides the hotel, but I certainly didn't even consider looking for a different place to stay).

I am not sure that a great BnB would draw us back to a city to revisit. However, when we revisit we do tend to use the same hotel or BnB. For us the city is the draw and the BnB a nice plus.

Isabel, could that be Hotel Berna? We consider it our base in Milan and though I would not go out of my way to stay in Milan after at least 10 prior stays, it is a comfortable place to pass the night when we need to.

Frank, we feel much the same as you and have, like the Berna, our favorites: an apartment in Lauterbrunnen overlooking Staubbach Falls, an apartment in Ortisei looking down the valley, and those lodgings make the decision to return annually an easy one.

We often speak of a hotel in Malcesine with the nicest proprietress ever, Hotel Erika. I am not a huge fan of the lake but I’d love to stay there again.

This year we stayed at Hotel Waldhaus in Bettmeralp and it is definitely an I-would-go-back scenario.

Not really for Europe, if I liked a hotel, I’ll stay there again if the rates are reasonable. But I’ve found hotel rates are all over the place. Admittedly, for Europe I usually pick bland but efficient chain hotels.

With my previous BF, we would return to some resorts in the USA, but these were more about a romantic getaway and not as much about sightseeing and travel.

I would offer a mixed response - there are places to which I return fairly often , and do have favorite hotels in those locations . Since I book my Autumn trip fairly early ( ten months in advance ) I have been fortunate not to encounter any difficulty getting booking in those hotels .
Just arrived for two weeks in Vienna at my hotel of choice there . https://www.classic-hotelwien.at/en/

I have not done what you are suggesting but I can imagine it, if it was a very special place. I have specifically sought out accommodations that I previously
enjoyed in a place. Ennis, Kenmare, and Kilkenny I stayed in the same B&Bs in 2002 and 2016. Stayed at Kalvin House in Budapest in the very same room in 2011 and 2014. I like to relive memories of prior visits I guess.

Not a city for me, but a town and a rural setting.

1) Glenfinnan House in Glenfinnan,Scotland, on the banks of Loch Shiel. Magnificent views of the Loch from the pub, dining room, and library; an old house that is cozy but not overly fussy; an excellent chef; often a roaring fire in the entry hall; and all sorts of wonderful activities all around — boat rides on the Loch; hikes all around; seeing the magnificent Glenfinnan Viaduct; riding the train (steam train or regular) to Mallaig; hikes at Morar or other silver sands spots; etc etc etc.

2) a BnB in Chablis, France (long since under new ownership since the times that I stayed there more than 10 years ago) that was owned by a delightful British couple — a big house out on the outskirts of town, set along a stream because it used to house a mill wheel. The countryside around Chablis is so gorgeous, I would go almost once a month and drive the country lanes, taste the wines, eat well, do some antiquing, and rest and talk with the owners — who I became so close to that they attended our wedding!!

Yes! We returned to Siena (even though we don’t care for it) just to stay at Borgo Grondaie. It was amazing, so relaxing.

I wouldn't necessarily go back to a place just for the B&B or hotel, however, there a few stand-outs that I would (and have) gone back to.

  • London: Aster House in South Kensington: http://www.asterhouse.com/. This is a perfect location, stones throw from a tube stop, a vibrant neighborhood, and great local eateries. The owner of Aster House, Leoni, makes you feel at home.
  • Tuscany (just outside of Siena): Borgo Argenina is a B&B with all the modern amenities in a charming Tuscan farmhouse. https://www.borgoargenina.it/. Not only is the location in the heart of Tuscany, but you have the added benefit of taking a cooking class on site.
  • Hotel Midmost Barcelona:https://majestichotelgroup.com/en/barcelona/hotel-midmost. Small boutique hotel near Las Ramblas. Amazing service one of the best hotel breakfasts, and luxurious rooms at a reasonable price. I have stayed in several places in Barcelona and this is the one I would go back to.

Hi Sue,

If you're going to Vienna, we stayed at Boutique Hotel Am Stephansplatz which is right across from St. Stephens Cathedral. They gave us the room on the top floor that looks out at the gorgeous tile roof. Breakfast is excellent, also.
