“ I know many countries in Europe have a day celebrating the nation's military, usually when we roll out our tanks and pretty uniforms for military parades down the main thoroughfares. But I'm not sure if we have a day specifically celebrating veterans or former soldiers.”

The Netherlands does not have a day when we celebrate the military and roll out our tanks. We however do have a Veterans Day, held every year on the last Saturday of June.

As we commemorate those who fought in both World Wars (a relative's name is on the wall at Tyne Cot), (an uncle landed tanks at D+2 and fought and survived the Bocage, another uncle was with signals going into Germany, and my father survived being a Commando in Greece, Croatia (Yugoslavia), Sicily and Italy) we commemorate Armistice Day in the UK today and Remembrance Sunday tomorrow.

An hour ago, at the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month, I was honoured to attend the unveiling of a new war memorial to one WW1 and one WW2 casualty, on the site of a now vanished community, very close to me.

Men who have never previously been publically commemorated before in their own town- a town of which their little community was a part.

Yes, an important day to honor our veterans. Those who served during a war - my dad in the signal corp in France, still kicking at 101 - and my brother who was wounded in Vietnam, now 73.
Also all those who served never knowing if they would be called to fight but were ready. My husband was in the Yugoslavian navy when Tito died and didn’t know what would happen. It took a few years for the war to begin. He was living here but 2 of his cousins served during the civil war. We thank them all.

Yes, a huge thank you to all veterans.

My husband doesn't do social media/forums, but he was career military, so I will speak for him;) All of the other men in my family are veterans as well. A few on my husbands side. My husband retired almost 20 years ago. I am up early with the dogs and let him sleep in today. It's the least I can do.

Thanks, Ms. Jo and everyone! I served in the US Navy many years ago, and will always be grateful to them for giving me my first opportunity to travel (I was stationed in Okinawa).

And thank you to all the other veterans out there!
