Happy New Year y'all

Happy New Year

If you celebrated NYE on the road, you can use this post to share it.

Here in Budapest, it just turned to midnight a short time ago, so I am justified in saying Happy New Year.

The snow began coming down about 6pm and continued until about 11pm. Not a heavy snowfall, but the beautiful type where the snowflakes are the size of Wheaties flakes. All told maybe 2” on the ground over the grass areas, and a thin film on walkways. Still roof tops and cars are coated and look the season.

Just before midnight we did the 3-minute walk up the street to the Opera House on Andrassy ut. To my surprise, both sides of Andrassy were full of spectators. This is one of the most beautiful intersections in town and people came out for it. Most of the people were dressed for a special evening. There was an undirected countdown and a cheer, then the Opera chorus began singing on the sidewalk. Finally, a small fireworks show from the building roof top next to the Opera.

I didn’t see or hear any drunks and there were no beer bottles crashing on the sidewalks like I have experienced in a few other cities on NYE (but to be honest that might be happening a few blocks away in District VII).

If someone wants to do a classy New Year, you join the party at the Opera House or the Budapest W Hotel across the street, or anyone of the many other private hotel and restaurant parties along Andrassy ut, and come outside for the countdown. This seems to be in the in place.

I am a miserable photographer but I posted two videos and a few photos.

I'd also like to wish everyone on the forum a happy and healthy New Year, with many happy travels.

Here in the beautiful Okanagan Valley, it's about -1C this evening but very little snow (except for the local ski hill). I've heard a few random fireworks but other than that, it's unusually quiet. I'll stay up until a few minutes after midnight to watch some of the New Year's festivities and entertainment on TV.

Happy New Year! That sounds beautiful, MR Ê. I can picture it.

We had a quiet evening, and that's how we like it.

Thirty-eight years ago on December 31, 1987, Mr BB and I had our first date. We had been friends for over 10 years at that point, but this was the first outing we had where romance was involved.

It was an eventful night. After we left the event, we came across our friends (with whom we'd attended a NYE dinner and dance) at the side of the country road leading into the city from a rural community centre. They'd been hit by a drunk driver, and they were injured. Our friend who was the designated driver was injured the worst. The dash and steering wheel had been pushed into her. (She recovered, but it took months.) Our friend's dad, in the passenger seat, was bleeding from the head and had a broken knee on one leg and a broken ankle on the other. Our friends in the back seat had minor injuries.

We waited with them in the snow for the ambulance and were tasked with tracking down and contacting other family members.

The driver who hit them blew 4 times the legal limit on the breathalyzer. Our friends reported that he had headed straight for them, and the DD, in trying to avoid him, ended up taking the brunt of the impact on her side of the vehicle. (Apparently, it's not uncommon for drunk drivers to zone in on other headlights.)

I knew that night that I would marry Mr. BB, after I saw him standing in the snow, helping our friend's dad to stand (he was trying to go attack the other driver, before he realized he couldn't walk and fell down in the snow), getting blood all over his nice dress coat but not caring about that.

Anyway, since then, we've hardly ever gone out on New Year's Eve, and we've never driven farther than the next neighbourhood.

We stayed home last night, ate stew, managed to stay awake until midnight, and then went to bed.

Happy New Year to all. Hope everyone had a safe NYE, and here's to more travels in 2026.

BB, a very poignant story. Thank you.

One of the things that I have enjoyed the last few years is not needing to drive. I grew up a car enthusiast but that came to a instant halt when I moved here. I haven't driven in over 3 years now. There is something liberating about it, and safe.

Happy New Years from a Seattle sky so foggy you couldn’t even see the fireworks!
I can just see the opera house with snow-
Thank you James it sounds lovely.
Last December in Budapest was one of our favorite trips.

A little late chiming in, but wishing everyone a happy and healthy 2026. Loved reading these stories. Here’s hoping the year brings plenty of memorable travels for all of us.

Renee, thank you. I've spent NYE in London, Rome, Sydney, DC and a handfull of other US cities. Rome was the least enjoyable for my personality type and age. Im a stuckup old fart and Budapest always nails it for me. I suspect tgere are other cities too. It would be great to hear more ideas.
