Hand Sanitizer Wipes...

Do hand sanitizer wipes have to be in the 1 quart size zip top bag with gels & liquids that at 3 oz or less or can they be carried separately in a carry on bag?

Jenn,

I've always carry them separately, and have never had any problems with that approach.

Liquids are things that can be poured. Gels are things that can be squeezed out of something. Unless the wipes fit one of these descriptions the don't have to be in the bag with the things that do.

Jenn, I stuff them in every corner of my under-the-seat bag! FWIW, in the very early days of the evolution of the 3-1-1 bag regulations some items like Wet Ones (in the pouch) had to go into the 3-1-1 bag. Luckily, that didn't last long!

Last year at SeaTac I observed a woman argue with a TSA agent about her half-full very large lotion bottle. She was going to spend a month in Paris, wanted to carry it on and I can only assume that she thought she couldn't buy something similar if not the same thing there. Anyway, she said that lotions were not liquids. I was amazed at how strident she got and how patient he was with her. But, she lost the argument. The TSA guy said that anything that would make a puddle when it was out of its container counted as a liquid. I thought that was a good guideline.

Wipes of all kinds are great inventions, not just for this application. I usually travel for about a month and take a 30 day supply of face wipes as well as the sanitizer ones. Neither needs to go in the 3-1-1 bag.

Here's the link to the TSA for more info: http://www.tsa.gov/traveler-information/3-1-1-carry-ons.

I also carry them separately…they do not need to go into the 3-1-1 baggie. They’re great for wiping off that nasty tray table or cleansing your face sometime during that 9 or 16 hours in the air flight, depending on where you’re going. :)

Thanks for all your input :)

I am surprised at what they consider to be gels and liquids-Peanut butter and hummus for example. They don't really create a puddle... I've been told these would also need to be in a zip top bag and no more than 3.4 oz... Its's fine when I am traveling with someone-we put all our personal care liquids & gels (toothpaste, shampoo, lotion, etc) in one bag and in the 2nd bag we put our liquid/gel snacks and condiments in (stuff like condiments we can't live without-for my husband, it's Tabasco sauce. For me, I like those squeezy packets of agave to put in my tea... stuff that's harder to find abroad than at home). I'm traveling solo for part of an upcoming trip to Dublin & London, so I don't have that luxury this time. Guess I'll have to make a little bit of space in that personal care bag for PB & agave...(In it's own bag within the bag so if something leaks, it'll be protected). I am going to leave my wipes separate.

Peanut butter and hummus would not be considered liquids, but gels. The sign at my local airport says if you can pour it out (liquid), squeeze it out (gel), or spray it out (aerosol), it has to go in the bag. Peanut and hummus are in the second category.

On a related note minimus.com has all kinds of packet sized things - tabasco sauce, malt vinegar, agave straws, mayo, soy sauce etc. This stuff keeps for at least two years (probably more like 10) so I order a bunch of items and have them in a special container in the back of my pantry. Come trip time I throw a few mayo, mustard, hot sauce packets in a zip lock bag and chuck it in my suitcase. Also throw some in my zip lock TSA baggie. These things really come in handy come picnic time shopping at the grocery store in wherever it is you're traveling. They also have the essential packets of Frank's Hotsauce - how can I eat an egg without that I ask you!
