Can anyone tell me the best and most inexpensive way to get from Hamburg to Klapeida?
My son and I are planning a trip to my father's birth place.
Hi,
How much time do you have for this trip to the former Memel and Memelland? Interesting place. If not pressed by time, one way is to take the ferry, ie, the ferry link between Kiel to Klapeida. Take the regional train from Hamburg Hbf to Kiel Hbf. The ferry station in Kiel is within walking distance from Kiel Hbf.
First, Klaipeida doesn't have an airport so you must use either Palanga (less than an hour away) or Vilnius (4 hours distant). From Hamburg you can fly via Riga to Palanga; or via Frankfurt to Vilnius (see www.skyscanner.com). From either Palanga or Vilnius you'd use a bus or mini-bus to get to Klaipeda. Alternately, you could use some combination of train and bus. Kaliningrad, that little chunk of Russia, may present a problem going by land. We've traveled by train between Vilnius and Warsaw without issue, and to Klaipeda from Riga by bus. And you've also been told about ferry between Germany and Lithuania (http://www.dfdsseaways.co.uk). You'll have to choose which is best, and calculate which is most inexpensive. Klaipeda and the surrounding area is very interesting. Have a good trip.
Thank you Fred for your response my son and I will have almost 2 weeks. How long is the ferry ride?
Hi,
You're welcome. For the ferry link between Kiel to Klaipeda (Memel), you should allow 21 to 22 hrs. The most inexpensive option is to reserve a seat that reclines. It has been years since I've taken a ferry, depends on the level luxury you and your son want.
You could take the ferry one way and fly out. Look up "Air Baltic" as a discount airline if you are pressed for time.
The best, most convenient and surprisingly inexpensive way is to take a mini-cruise on a ferry boat from Kiel directly to Klaipeda.
Drop down menue, other routes, Kiel-Kleipeda
From Hamburg to the port of Kiel it's one hour by train.
Thank you so much for all your responses. Since I have never been further than Hamburg I was a little apprehensive about the ferry.
