Hall or Innsbruck?

We have decide to spend out first night after landing in Munich in either Hall or Innsbruck. We will be there in mid September. The history of the Innsbruck Olympics has always fasinated me and it's definitely a place I want to spend a day at. In Innsbruck we were considering staying at the Goldener Adler and in Hall we either have Gasthof Badl or the Gartenhotel Maria Theresia to consider. Kitzbuehel is another area I am interested in just from watching the downhill skiing on TV. I have a rental car but thought I could save parking fees by staying in Hall and using the bus service to Innsbruck and Kitzbuehel. Looking for suggestions, ideas , comments... We like the idea of bicycles to get around too... We are first timers to Europe. After leaving this area, we plan on making a base camp in the Salzburg are for 2 days then it's off to who knows where... Vienna sounds neat, but I'm in "old austria" rather then a big city like Vienna, but plan on spending one day there also.

Have you considered Linz? The Linz torte, you know. We spent three wonderful days there last October. Its an easy town to get around in and has great shopping.

I stayed in Hall in 2009. Hall seems a little out of the way if it's Innsbruck you really want to see, but there are trains as well as buses to Innsbruck. I've used both. The train is a little faster, but they both work. To find train and bus schedules in that area, use www.vvt.at (Verkehrsverbund Tirol).

Hall is a nice stop, I'm not sure it warrants a night. Innsbruck isn't special; I wouldn't consider it a destination.

Hi jay, We've stayed at the Gasthof Badl in Hall in Tirol on 4 separate trips to the area (10/01, 10/03, 4/05, 11/10). Between Innsbruck and Hall, I guess you know which I'd choose :) We find Hall in Tirol very convenient to Innsbruck and the surrounding area. We have plenty of photo's of Hall, the Badl, etc. at: www.worldisround.com/home/pja1/index.html Paul

We loved Hall! We stayed in 2008 at Gasthof Badl. It is right on the river, beautiful views, nice hotel, good food at the hotel (our favortie dinner) you walk across the foot bridge to the old town. But, we love small quaint villages with fewer tourists. It is very small, but that is the charm for us. I personally wouldn't stay in Innsbruck, easy to visit there from Hall. Another place to consider- Mittenwald. Twice we stayed there after landing in Munich. But, also, a very small village worth a night. The proximity isn't close to Innsbruck, it is just a nice stop from Munich.

We rather enjoyed Hall and hiking in the surrounding area. Innsbruck? Not so much and good only for a brief stroll Further, Swarovski Kristallwelten, in nearby Wattens, was fun.

Visiting Linz was a real pleasure. It was good to see a place that is not on the general tourist trail and to get a feel for what a small urban area is like. Not all people need or want "big city" experiences, especially if they've already had them over and over as they've travelled.

I guess I'm surprised by the unfavorable reviews of Innsbruck. Maybe just a quick stop is all I need. Isn't the olympic village or any of that stuff still there? I read the Olympic bobsled course was open for rides and what about Nordkette? Maybe I'm estimating to much time to see the sites of Innsbruck.

"Maybe just a quick stop is all I need. Isn't the olympic village or any of that stuff still there?" Yes, but remember, it was the WINTER Olympics and you will be there in September when most of the winter sports infrastructure will be closed. Count me among those who found Hall unremarkable.

Also, if you look at the layout, the Innsbruck Olympics were spread far and wide through the surrounding mountains. Most of the sights are at least as long of drive from Innsbruck as Hall. Visiting the sights from Hall won't take you much longer than visiting from Innsbruck.
