We lived in Augsburg, Germany for four years and visited Garmisch several times. We loved it. Going up to the top of the Zugspitze, highest mountain in Germany is great.

Have been to Tirol, spending several days in Innsbruck. I would take Garmish over Innsbruck.

As for Ulm, it was OK, but consider taking the Romantic Road back to Frankfurt.

I see that you've made many stops for numerous nights in smaller cities. That's the way to go--slowly.

It's just 38 miles from Innsbruck to Garmisch. I'd just find a room in one of the villages outside of Innsbruck and go with it. The region has an incredible number of bed and breakfasts in just about every little town. And they're all great places.

We just enjoy getting up on the sides of the mountains and drive from village to village around Innsbruck. It's been awhile since we've been back, and we need to make returning a priority. I once lived on the Inn River there.

Geovagriffith…

Thank you for your suggestions. May I ask which midway city do you recommend before Frankfurt on the romantic road? I see some but I want to see if my answers align with yours. Thank you. I am looking into that route.

Thanks a million!!!

Rothenburg ob der Tauber Gould be the best of the towns close to Frankfurt. Wurzburg is a larger city and a bit closer if you don't want a town.

I recently had to take my car for a repair in Würzburg and for a car I found it very much a city. If you are driving and want a stop for the night it might not be my first choice. Lots of traffic lights, bus lanes, and not the world's simplest road layout.

RodT just down the road has easy parking and is compact, and is plenty photogenic, but is somewhat further from Frankfurt.
