Our family is traveling to Europe this summer for a month. It's my wife and I, and our 3 dauthers ages 17, 16, & 15. We need to know what are the regulations or limits in regards to hotels and taxi cabs for number of people. Are we going to fit in just one taxi? Are there any hotels were we can all stay in just one room?
You could have some problems. Hotel rooms and taxis are smaller than US. Second issue would be the luggage for five. Most taxi will only handle four comfortably. You might make inquires for a large sedan and driver -- more expensive than a taxi but probably cheaper than two taxis. And there is always public transit. As for hotels, ask for a family room for five. Some have family others do not. Just make sure the hotels understand that you have five adults. Don't show up expecting to sneak five into a room for four.
I agree that you should consider apartments. Not all require a week long stay. If you are going this summer I would start looking for a place to stay ASAP. Try using vrbo.com. You rent directly from the owner, so there may be more flexibility for how long you stay. If you are going to cities, most of them have great public transportation.
Definitely look into apartments. If you give us an idea of where you're going, you can get some suggestions of where to look. I've had better luck with googling "vacation apartments (name of city)" and then double-checking what I find on Tripadvisor, there's other agencies or tourist information sites that are helpful, too.
Apartments will be cheaper than hotels (or the same price), give you more room to spread out and access to a kitchen and washer and dryer. Buying meals out for 5 people can REALLY add up. You can buy groceries for a week for your apartment for the cost of one dinner out.
Every time you need a taxi, you are likely to need a van. Taxis don't usually hold five plus the driver and probably won't even try if you're carrying luggage.
