Grenoble to Edinburgh--2 questions

I need to get from Grenoble to Edinburgh on Tuesday, June 19. There are no direct flights that day. I'd like to go as hassle-free as possible (such as avoiding changing airports). I've found two attractive options: 1. Train to Lyon, Flybe flight to Edinburgh with a 2-hour layover in Birmingham, and 2. Aerocar to Geneva, nonstop Easyjet flight to Edinburgh. I'm leaning toward option 2 because it has one less transfer. Each option is reasonably priced. I don't need to take the cheapest way. What advice can you give me?

Also, when does an American citizen have to go through customs and/or immigration when traveling in Europe? I'll be coming from Milan to Grenoble a few days before this.

Bus from Grenoble to Geneva Airport then direct flight to Edinburgh is the best.

There are no passport controls between Schengen countries (e.g. Italy, France and Switzerland). There are passport controls when you enter the UK. Customs (for things) is a non-event unless you are carrying items you shouldn’t.
