Green Card insurance fee for rental cars?

My wife & I are going to Prague, Salzburg, Vienna, and Budapest this September. We were going to make it an "all-train" vacation, but someone recommended that we stop in Český Krumlov on our way between Prague & Salzburg. That can still be accomplished by train, but I was hoping to rent a car in Prague, drive to Český Krumlov, then Salzburg, spend a few days driving around the region, and then drop the car in Vienna.

All seemed doable until the rental site we used, AutoEurope, sprung a EUR 4235 "green card insurance" charge on us. I've since canceled the reservation and am considering using the train between Prague & Salzburg via Český Krumlov*. We'd rent a car locally in Salzburg, which should be pretty easy - and cheaper to do.

Has anyone encountered this "green card insurance" fee?

*One reason I liked taking the car there is that we can leave our luggage in the car while looking around town. If we take the train, we won't be able to do that.

Never heard of "green card insurance." What is it. I assume the big issue and expensive would be the drop for picking up on one country and return to another. Those fees can often exceed the rental cost.

I think this might be a computer glitch or, as mentioned above, a missed decimal point. I have a feeling it’s a €423.50 drop charge to rent in one country and return in another. AutoEurope has great customer service reps. I’m sure a call to their toll free number would have solved or at least explained your problem.

I just ran a rental on their .com site (not the .eu site) for a VW Golf, $0 deductible, Prague RR pickup, Vienna RR drop off, September 4-11. $471.66 which included a $274.38 estimated drop fee. No mention of Green Card Insurance.

Funny, because I did speak to one of their customer support reps and he insisted that the charge as shown was correct. It sounded fishy so I canceled the reservation. I might try again, though. Thanks all.

I wonder if OP made a typo and was trying to state 'EUR $235'. ( the 4 and $ sign sharing the same key) ??
