My wife & I are going to Prague, Salzburg, Vienna, and Budapest this September. We were going to make it an "all-train" vacation, but someone recommended that we stop in Český Krumlov on our way between Prague & Salzburg. That can still be accomplished by train, but I was hoping to rent a car in Prague, drive to Český Krumlov, then Salzburg, spend a few days driving around the region, and then drop the car in Vienna.
All seemed doable until the rental site we used, AutoEurope, sprung a EUR 4235 "green card insurance" charge on us. I've since canceled the reservation and am considering using the train between Prague & Salzburg via Český Krumlov*. We'd rent a car locally in Salzburg, which should be pretty easy - and cheaper to do.
Has anyone encountered this "green card insurance" fee?
*One reason I liked taking the car there is that we can leave our luggage in the car while looking around town. If we take the train, we won't be able to do that.
