Great Tip, Rick!! Unplug That Fridge!!

Last night I watched the latest episode of Monday Night Travel, which featured a trip report from Rick Steves about his recent 50-day guidebook research trip through Europe.

At the end of the video, he shares a few travel tips. The one that really stood out to me was unplugging a noisy hotel refrigerator. For some reason, that had never occurred to me before. I could have used that tip on my last trip. The refrigerator in my Stockholm hotel was so loud!

Refrigerators are my arch enemy! Every room that I go in that has one, I either turn it off or unplug it. I can't stand the noise. Been doing that for years :-)

Great tip as long as you have nothing that needs refrigeration.

Don't forget to plug it back in when you leave.

Never, especially in a heat wave. Those refrigerators get nasty smells and mold quickly, even if empty.

I have to disagree with the advice to unplug hotel refrigerators. Doing so will most likely violate guest accommodation terms, and the hotel may hold you liable for property damage. When the power to a fridge is cut, the frost built up inside may melt and leak, or trap moisture inside the warm appliance, leading to mold and foul odors. Additionally, many modern properties use smart mini-bars with automated sensors, meaning a loss of power can signal to the hotel computer that the fridge is emptied. It is better to leave the appliances alone. It’s not yours, so don't mess with it.
