how safe is walking the streets in granada?
We were just in Granada the first week of January. Didn't seem any different than any other place in Spain. The Gypsy women with their sprigs of rosemary were around but they didn't seem very aggressive which surprised us. We had read reports about them but they were easy to avoid. Didn't see any pickpockets either but we never see pickpockets. I am sure there were around somewhere.
I felt safe walking in Granada--I still would take the same precautions that you would take in any moderate-sized city. Wear you money belt, be aware of your surroundings, etc.
Here's what Rick says, "If aggressive, obnoxious Gypsy women force sprigs of rosemary on you, avoid them. While they are mostly harmless, petty pickpockets are plentiful in Granada. In general, be on guard, especially late at night in the Albayzin."
I had to walk just before dawn one year, to an all night pharmacy, to get medication for a sick travelling companion. It felt a little weird but I didn't feel unsafe.
In the daytime, thousands of people were marching in the streets, protesting against war in Iraq (it was 2003) and it still didn't feel unsafe. Take all necessary precautions, secure your money, etc., and have a good time.
