I own a Garmin 265W GPS unit for getting around the USA and Canada. Someone gave me a Garmin "City Navigator NT - Europe" SD card that has maps, etc, for Europe. If I install the data will it overwrite the USA data, or do both sets of information co-exist? Is there any chance that I could accidently erase the USA data during installation? Thanks for your advice.
I have an older Garmin unit and discovered that there isn't space for both Europe and the US in the Garmin's memory. So at least one of the maps has to reside on the SD card. The Garmin can read the maps directly from the card. Another glitch is however that the unit cannot read from both the SD card and from it's memory at one time, so if the card with my US maps is inserted, the Europe maps on memory are not loaded. But it isn't a big deal. Very few trips include both driving in Europe and the US.
Nothing is going to happen to your US data. The GPS will be using information off of the SD card (which you put into the unit).
Geor, My Garmin Nüvi GPS contains both North American and European data, and both sets of maps are stored in the memory, and not on an SD card. I doubt there's any possibility at all of "accidentally erasing" the USA data. Cheers!
Right, because the European SD card will be onboard, the US maps will not be affected. Nothing will be overwritten.
Heck, I've had both sets installed at once... the only problem I've had is when trying to find a waypoint, and having my North American ones part of the list... um, no, I'm in London, and don't need directions to my favourite store in Bellingham!
