Got Suggestions - Winter Destination for 10YR Anniversary

I would like to take my wife on a special trip for our tenth anniversary. We've been all over the states and are now ready to cross the Atlantic. I'm just an average skier and my wife prefers to hang around the fireplace with a book. I'm looking for a destination with some Holiday ambiance and is somewhat user friendly for a couple of Texans. Is it Austria?

Thanks, Rusty

If you are just an average skier and your wife prefers staying indoors, do you still want to go to the mountains? You can find holiday ambience (i.e., decorations, not necessarily snow) throughout Europe if your timing is right, and you might prefer visiting a larger city like Rome, Paris, or London and seeing the Christmas displays and sights of that city, as opposed to holing up in a ski lodge all week.

We will most likely travel in late Nov or early December. Since we have never been to Europe I am wide open to suggestions. I thought the cabin or lodge thing might be more romantic and leave the daytime for short trips.

Germany has beautiful Christmas markets and a great holiday ambiance. I would suggest Bavaria or Austria. Switzerland might also be a possibility, but I have never been, so I can't speak to it.

Check out these two websites: www.mittenwald.de for the town of Mittenwald, Germany and www.lermoos.at for the town of Lermoos, Austria. These towns are in the Bavarian area surrounded by mountains. Both are a 2 hour train ride from Munich. You could fly into Munich and stay there for 2 nights--see the Christmas market, art museums, beer hall, etc. Then take a 2 hour train ride to either of the above mentioned cities. I've been to Lermoos several times during the summer. It's a lovely, small town with lots of great pensions/zimmers to stay at and really nice restaurants. We have not been to Mittenwald, but it also looks like a great town with lots of winter activities. Check out www.schwalbennestl.de for accommodations in Mittenwald. Send me a personal message about accommodations in Lermoos. Have fun making lasting memories!

Hello Rusty,

What a wonderful idea!! Well, first off what do you and your wife like to do? Do you like active things (skiing, hiking, etc.) or do you like museums, shopping, dining?

Do you like big cities or would you prefer small towns/villages?

Those answers should help narrow the choices!

I would suggest Wurzburg, Germany. Not far from Frankfurt and close to lots of other neat places with Holiday markets like Rothenburg, Wertheim, Nurnburg. Fairly large city with lots of sights to see.
