google maps for itouch

I can't believe i'm having such a hard time with this but I absolutely cannot find an app for the itouch that lets me put google maps onto it for offline viewing. Please help!

There is no economic incentive for either Google or Apple to make it available offline. Google would loose ad revenue, Apple/AT&T would loose money from the data charges. Also it would take up a lot of memory.

If you're traveling in big cities the Tube 2 software would be a better choice:

It's the same app that appears in the Apple ad featuring Rick's audio tours.

elijah,

As someone else mentioned, adding Google maps to an IPod Touch would likely use a LOT of memory. That might not be a concern to those with a 32GB model, but since there are a greater amount of 8GB models in use those users might have a problem.

The best solution I've found is to use either the built-in Maps or use Safari to access Google maps when there's a Wi-Fi connection available. I also travel with a portable GPS unit, so that helps a lot.

For getting around cities, the simple Maps provided by Hotels and Hostels are great. Enlarging and copying the maps in the Guidebooks is another solution.

Cheers!

elijah,

no need for an app. when you have a wifi connection pull up google maps and whatever "map" you need via safari. then, click the home and hold buttons at the same time (top of ipod and round button on front). this acts as a screen shot of whatever web page you are viewing. The screen shot resides in your photo section in a folder called "saved photos". You can view these anytime and even zoom in and out a bit too before it gets blurry.I used this frequently when i was in the UK earlier this year.

Susan, Thank you. I just used your tip to save maps for my upcoming trip and they look great. Last time I printed everything out. This was a great option for getting directions from station to hotel, etc.

Took ipod touch and Michelin maps as recommended in RS books. Both were useless. Best maps of area were found at local tourist information offices and the real life saver was the France map from the Automobile Club. Depending on where you are driving, many streets are one way in smaller cities and there are many roundabouts. Husband was very happy we brought a compass. A gps would have been better after we saw how it worked with the few taxi cabs we took.
