Good wool socks

I'm a great fan of Smartwool and love the three that I bought in summer, but now that I'm looking to get some good, warm, wool-type socks for the family, I realise that it could cost a small fortune if I outfitted everyone in Smartwool.

Is there an alternative that is half the price, but "almost" as good? As for moi, I will definitely buy me a couple more, LOL They helped a lot with my tender feet, but my hubby and kids don't have the same problems that I do.

A great place to stock up on Smartwool socks is www.SierraTradingPost.com where they usually cost about half as much as regular retail. Also, Costco makes a great similar product (for adults) that our family uses and we really can't tell the difference. We hike in Costco and Smartwool socks all the time and love them.

We don't have a Costco, and also Sierra Trading does not have the sizes for my daughter (medium) and very little in large for the men. I was quite surprised.

Thanks. Will keep looking online unless someone else has suggestions.

Eli, I like LLBean's wool socks. They are big and sturdy, and they wash well. I haven't tried the Smartwool.

Karen, I am wearing LLBean's socks and though they're nice and warm, they are way too big for shoes in my opinion. They're too bulky. Smartwool (the ones I have) keep your feet warm and helps prevent blisters (my exeperience) but they're not bulky.

If I could max out my credit card at one store, it'd be: www.rei.com.

Most of my light hiking wool socks are REI's brand and I've never had a problem. They are a few dollars cheaper than the competing brands but I think they do the job just the same.

Costco has a pretty good sock. It comes in three packs for about $10.

If you the time, keep checking on Sierra Trading Post. their selection changes frequently and they have the best prices.

If you Google smartwool socks, you can usually find online outlets that will give you 20% off.

I've tried a few brands and Smartwool is the one I like the best. I usually use their midweight ones.

I was at T J Maxx yesterday and they have a whole wall full of socks for everyone. The one here had Smartwool, Columbia, ect... they were 1/2 the price. I bought a pair of SW a few weeks ago for 15.00 and loved them but can't spend that kind of money on socks, but now I can when they are 5.00 at TJ Maxx.

I've tried other brands of socks that claim to be like Smartwool and I haven't found ones as good. Like others said you can get them discounted at Sierra TP, or the kind of outdoors stores that sell seconds and last year's items, especially if you don't mind funky colors or patterns.

I decided to bite the bullet and spring for Smartwool socks for the family. The Walking Co. had a special on, buy 3 get 1 free and that helped a bit. So far, everyone is crazy about their Smartwool socks :-).
