Of course outside of the RS apps, looking for decent apps for Lux, Belgium, and France. So many that I read about and then download are all advertising and not great.
There was a similar post a few weeks ago, I think, if you want to get some ideas from that. I don't use many. I love maps. me. I download the maps when I have wifi then use it similar to GPS. I use google translate and duolingo to learn a language.
City Maps to Go is great for creating mapped lists of things to do/see/eat.
Thank you! I figured there were other posts about apps, but I couldn't figure out how to search the forums. I'll do a bit more digging.
Louise, the forum search function does seem to be a little unfriendly. I usually go to BING (or google) and type something like , "Rick Steves travel forum travel apps". and then look for hits that start, "community. . . " If I'm looking for a particular post and I remember the name of a responder, I'll include the name in the search as well.
What are you looking for the apps to do? That will help people recommend "good" ones.
I find the app for my airline very useful. It will remind me of when to check in, and I can usually check in right at the app and get an electronic boarding pass, so I don't need to be near a computer and printer. I can also look at it to see if my flight time has changed.
If you're on Android (don't know about Apple), it's very easy to save web pages as shortcuts. I like these even better than apps, since they take up very little of my phone memory. For instance, if I want to reference a museum website, or interesting article, I'll save it as a shortcut, then I can get to it quickly and easily later.
If you're taking trains, the DB Navigator app will help you quickly find train schedules, although it won't show prices for trains that do not start or end in Germany.
If you do not have Global Entry, and you are returning to the US via one of the airports that participate in Mobile Passport, get this app! It can save LOTS of time on your return: https://mobilepassport.us/.
Try TripAdvisor, that's what I use sometimes. But I also save webpages, it is easier and takes up less space.
We are visiting London and Paris next month. To bypass the apps that have so many ads, I am transferring audio tours from YouTube for the sites we are visiting. Do a search on YouTube for london audio tour myWoWo or Paris audio tour myWoWo and you can see the options available. I'll have these on my playlist and we can play them as we tour, so no need for WiFi as we visit the sites.
I've been very happy with Next Stop Paris. It's an app that tells you how to use the Metro to get around Paris.
