Good shoes to support feet with low/no arch

I am going to be traveling in Venice and Rome the first week of June. I have almost flat feet and was wondering if anyone had good recommendations for shoes that will be comfortable, support my "missing" arch and also be semi stylish.

I've had reasonably good luck with Keene, though some models rub too much against the back of my heel. Also, Mephisto and Ecco usually provide good support. Definitely check with either a podiatrist or a good shoe store re orthotics. Or even check the foot care section at the drugstore: I think Dr. Scholl's makes an insert.

Hi Laura,

You can always check out the "Graffiti Wall" on this website and look under "Best Walking Shoes" to get a few ideas..

Have fun in Italy!

I also have no arch and I find that the only shoe that works for me are Keens and Salamons. Salamons are a little sporty though.

Check out using good orthotics. Your Dr. or podiatrist can recommend. There is a store in Charlotte called "Good Feet" that sells custom fit non-prescription orthotics. I think they are a chain- maybe there is one in your area.

If you have access The Walking Company store in your city, they can also help determine the best orthotic for you. I second Ecco shoes, which are also sold at the The Walking Company.

Try on a pair of Skecher Shape-ups, they have various styles, but the best thing about them, is they have such a cushiony sole, that having flat feet would not be a problem. They are extremely good on cobblestones too, or even in the rain, as the sole is quite thick. I have been wearing mine every day since July, and am simply thrilled with them, as I walk a lot every day. I have arthritis in my big toe, and this is the only shoe that I have found that keeps my foot pain-free. Amazing design. They look a bit like MBT's, but are half the price and the sole is really soft, so they don't take a long time getting used to the sole being rounded.

If I am not mistaken, the Army did a study with people who had flat feet, and they have no more problems walking long distances than other people. They used to ban them from the Army and after this study, they let them join.

Laura, for my 2008 trip I bought a pair of Merrell walking shoes from REI. Those things were terrible and my feet ached all the time. I was back in REI this past weekend looking for shoes for my upcoming trip. I told the shoe guy about my last pair and he said "you don't have flat feet do you?". Supposedly the Merrell walking shoes have little to no arch support and are better equipped for people with flat feet. He seemed to know what he was talking about and sold me a great pair of Keen's and feel great. Can't wait for my trip! Rob

I swear by my Ecco's! I have flat feet too, as does a friend, and her doctor suggested Ecco.
