Good places to purchase scarves

Hello everyone. My wife and I greatly appreciate everyone's ideas and memories. In a recent post about underpacking, several posters mentioned the usefulness of women's scarves. We're leaving for London and Paris in a couple of weeks and my wife decided to purchase a scarf in each city instead of packing any - a practical, useful, and fun souvenir. We're confident that she can buy a scarf just about anywhere. However, does anyone remember any particularly good locations for scarves? Does anyone have any fond memories of a scarf purchase?

Hi Tom.. In Paris the outdoor markets have beautiful scarves. I always get some at the President Wilson Market, and the Saxe Breteiul market. I will send you the metro stops and the days of these markets. I have the most wonderful book called Paris in a Basket- with all the markets, how to get there and the days of the week. The out door markets are a real slice of French life. People go to socialize as well as buy their daily food.We always get some bread, cheese olives , fruit, drink , and have a picnic somewhere. They are a great place to get some photos if you go early, otherwise it is too crowded. We have travelled all over France and have wonderful memories of the outdoor markets. The big one in Isle sur la Sorgue on Sunday is amazing, also the one in Cotignac in the Var. Another neat thing to buy is a market basket or little French cooking utensils. We got a Little Brie cheese keeper.

I have scarves from all over the world..

every time I put one on, it reminds me of that particular day and the trip as a whole.

They are everywhere in the street markets, honestly she can't miss them!

what will be hard is holding her back on how many she does purchase..

I always purchase scarves in Paris. Markets are good for cheap prices, but the quality is somewhat lacking. I bought 4 Pashmina (sp?) at the Bastille market last fall and I love them. Scarves in the big department stores were unbelievably expsensive. One store though that I love is ETAM. It is on Rue de Rivoli and is a kind of target type place. I bought three beautiful scaves there and love them all.

In Paris and everywhere we went in Italy scarves were ubiquitous...it would be hard not to find them. Small shops and street vendors were our sources. Colorful and inexpensive, they quickly became the souvenir of choice. Last April in Paris, the Yasser Arafat look was in; not my cup of tea as far as scarves go but c'est la vie. And they're not just for women as many men wore them too.

In London go to the east end - Whitechapel. Aldgate east tube stop off the District line, go left to Brick lane or right to Commercial street. This area has a huge Pakistani and Indian population. There are scarves everywhere! I bought some for Christmas presents last year when I went in December. Some were only a pound or two each! There is also a huge street market on Sundays on Brick lane. Tons of fabrics, scarves, Saris, and Sarongs. Girly girl paradise!! Just try not to be in that area after dark...its still not the greatest area to be hanging around in at night, it hasnt much improved since the Jack the Ripper "incidents", im afraid to say...

Camden Locke market is where I bought 2 inexpensive scarves. Still wearing them.
Also got a damn pricey but lovely cashmere scarf at 9 Pond Place London. I vaguely recall Whistles had a good selection of scarves as well. Two great cities.
Have a wonderful trip!

I too have scarves (and bandanas and buffs) from all over Europe and street vendors are great places to find them. If you want something really special and are willing to pay, you might consider a Liberty of London print scarf or a Burberry from London. You can also find Scottish tartans in London. I'm having a brain freeze (senior moment) right now and cannot think of the place in Paris that sells absolutely gorgeous items at unbelievable prices. As someone mentioned, every time I wear one I have a fond memory and a momentary vacation.

The senior moment has passed. Hermes has the high end scarves in Paris.

I love looking at (and sometimes buying) scarves in around Leciester Square in London. There are also lots of small shops in and around the China Town area that carry them. Covent Garden is also a good market to check.

I walked into a Burberry store last month just to see what their scarves cost since they were having a sale. I almost burst out laughing when the salesperson said 275 €. You have got to be kidding! No scarf is worth that much. Hermes scarves are over the top expensive too. Even if I won the lotto, I cannot imagine spending that much on a "scarf".

I purchased a creamy linen Senas scarf last summer, not in Paris, but in Bayeux. They are made in Germany from what I can tell from looking for them online. I adore the softness and versatility and want another. It was about 40 Euros, but I would pay that again in an instant. I love it. Likely that brand is found all over Europe. If anyone can tell me where to find this brand, I would certainly appreciate it!

Well Paris has beautiful scarves. I recommend going to the mall Bon Marche. I bought a fantastic silk silk scarf that was almost the size of a blanket,I will have it forever along with the memory of paree.
There are also great little boutiques surrounding that mall as well as fantastic places to eat. Just know how to order- or you will get alot of ham and butter baquettes.

au revoir,
Theresa
