I'm doing a tour in Holland, which will be busy & social, and looking for a small town, home base in W. Europe to recover in! On my last trip, my home bases were Certaldo Alto, Murren, Cochem, Dinan, & Brugge - all wonderful! Looking for same type - wonderful small town w/ some day trips - for this trip. Ideas, please!

What time of year are you going? Will you have a car for your day trips? My suggestions: Konstanz at Lake Constance (Bodensee), Wernigerode in the Harz Mountains and the city of Stralsund, or the island of Ruegen - South to North-East in Germany. A car is not strictly necessary; all have good train connections.

's-Heerenberg with its marvelous Kasteel Huis Bergh and resident witches, and nearby Zeddam. Plenty camping, Germany's feet away, not miles, excellent pancakes, a neat very old windmill. Great walking, and bicycling.
