We are going to Vienna and Prague and my husband would like to replace his coat. He's looking for something water resistant yet breathable with a hood. He needs a 4X so is somewhat limited and we have to be able to get it in time for our departure on September 28th. Any suggestions?
This late you might want to visit your local Eddie Bauer or REI if there is one near. Mail order is out. You'd never have time for a return.
Columbia has two rain jackets in 4X:

Early October in Prague and Vienna? You need a pair of long John's a light sweater and a light outer shell. You want need a coat till December if the weather is typical.
October is still fall or autumn.
https://www.yr.no/place/Czech_Republic/Prague/Prague/statistics.html
October:
8.2°C mean temp
13.0°C mean high temp
4.3°C mean low temp
days with precipitation 5
47F mean
55F mean high
40F mean low (long after bed time)
For me, not "coat" weather. There will be sidewalk cafes open (with heaters of course)
I am currently mid-trip with a new waterproof jacket and it is working really well. It's Cabelas XPG. They had it in women's plus sizes so would guess they've got it in extended sizing for men as well. While the weather has mostly been pretty hot I've had a few days of heavy rain and the jacket has kept me dry without being sweaty underneath. It's got a soft feel and isnt crinkly.
I would go for waterproof over water resistant if you have a choice.
You do have time for mail order especially if you do 2 day rush shipping.
My weather experience is October marks the turn for weather in that area. At the start of October, it's still nice - cool to warm days and cool nights with rain a possibility. By the end of October, it's cold - generally colder days (50's or lower) and rarely very cold (30's) with cold nights. The question is when it will change? Each year it varies. One year may get cold early in October, the next it may be nice most of the month. At the start of the month, he probably won't need more than a sweater and rainshell. By the end of the month, you will want a warm layer every day.
If it's me, I'd go with a packable down vest and good waterproof shell. Add a sweater or two for added warm layer options. I'd only pack a thicker coat if I'm going in late fall or winter.
My favorite thick coat for travel is currently at Costco (I think Weatherproof brand?). They have a hooded coat with zip pockets and double zip front that is really warm and doesn't weigh much at all. I don't know if they have 4X?
A lot of good quality rain gear these days but the 4X is a limiting factor. Columbia's shipping options:
SHIPPING METHOD RATE EXPECTED DELIVERY TIME
UPS GROUND $6.00 3-7 BUSINESS DAYS
UPS 2-DAY AIR $12.00 2-3 BUSINESS DAYS
UPS OVERNIGHT $19.00 1-2 BUSINESS DAYS
If you haven't found a coat yet, I just found a possibility for you on the Costco website. It is the Weatherproof® Men's Ultra Tech Jacket, comes in 4XL, has good ratings, and is very well-priced at only $29.99!!! Looks like Brad already mentioned it.
My husband just bought a "Paradox" jacket at Costco for $25.00. It has a hood is waterproof and breathable. However at our store it was only available in XXL. Check on-line at Paradoxoutdoor.com or Costco on line.
I really like my Scottevest. Their clothes are made for travel - lots of pockets, most zippered & many on the inside of the garment for better security.
Thanks to all for your suggestions. He ended up finding a coat at Carhart. We leave next week so we'll see how it works out.
I used the Paradox coat from Costco last nov/dec in Amsterdam, Prague, Germany. Was perfect for rain and wind and with layers was good for the cold too.
