I'm going to be traveling the country (largely the west coast) for the next few months, as part of a touring production set in the 1940's. Any good recommendations for fitting books?
Blue Highways by Wm Least Heat Moon
and a great website www.byways.org
This organization was offering a free book detailing scenic byways across our great country. I got one, but don't know if it's still offered.

Let's try this again:

Funny how well placed commas makes life easier.....
John Steinbeck's Travels With Charlie.
Steinbeck would really be good.
Or try Bill Bryson - The Lost Continent, Made in America, Notes from a Big Country or my fave, The Thunderbolt Kid. I laughed so much reading this last one, people kept staring at me on the subway.
Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance.
Its not really about the 1940's or the west coast, but I love the mindset it puts me in while traveling.
"Cannery Row" might be another good one, fitting with the time period and locale.
It doesn't fit in with the 1940's, but I love reading Kerouac's "On the Road" while on road trips out west.
Thank you all so much for your thoughtful replies! I really appreciate it. Happy Travels!.. armchair and not!
