Going Silent - For A While (Now Back)

We are off for a month in London and southern France to include a week cruise with Viking around Lyon and Avignon. This will be our first experience with a river cruise although we have been on over a dozen ocean cruises. Our final week will be in Paris with friends. Especially looking forward to avoiding all of the crazy political discussion these days. Maybe it will be about over when we return in October. Till then we will try to catch a posting or two. Would especially like to know how Ivyallover's six month stay problem in the Schengen zone is solved.

Have a wonderful trip, Frank. I'm sure the snows of October here in Colorado will hold off until you return! Hopefully, you will post your river cruise experience when you are home and rested up!

Have a great time, I look forward to your trip report.

I can relate to your remarks about the political discussions and will be glad myself to miss the craziness when I go to Italy October 6 - 25 on the RS 17 Days in Italy tour. It will be nice to not hear any political news. I will miss 2 of the Presidential debates, yippee! And, will return to Atlanta just in time to cast my vote early. Then I can stop thinking about it.

Have a wonderful trip and safe travels, Frank! Sounds wonderful :)

We are also about to embark on a trip - going to Oslo, Berlin and London on Monday! Like you, I am looking forward to getting away from all the election madness Stateside, but unfortunately, I doubt it will relent in October. Still, a month away is a good thing!

I will Zoe. You know me - I try hard to live by the rule that you post what you know from experience rather than what you think you know from the web and other postings. We are looking forward to the cruise and Paris. It has been several years since we were in Paris.

Sounds like a great trip! Enjoy your river cruise - I would love to hear about it as well. Have fun getting re-acquainted with Paris!

Safe travels, and have fun.

But, likely you'll have a chance to hear election discussion on your cruise, in the news, and from locals (if you hint at all you are open to comment). Some may just ask you what you think of the election...that was the case w/ our 4-country trip in June.

Last month my sister sent me a piece that was published in Ireland about Trump's wife's previous career..did not include the photos.

The whole world is fascinated with THIS election. It is an odd one, for sure. And, if we think it's all so weird, rest assured most in Europe are really scratching their heads about HOW it got this far, along with what the heck is happening in America.

You'll be missed on the forum, but thanks for letting us all know you will be out having fun/creating more special memories.

Have a great trip.... as far as the election... I was in a little bar in Antigua, Guatemala a few weeks ago (Frida's) and looked over the bar and there was a poster with a drawing of Trump, and a quote (in Spanish) that I will not repost! Later that day at the airport in Guatemala city we saw 2 people wearing a t-shirt with the same quote. So... it will not escape you:)

Frank, have a great trip.

Maybe it will be about over when we return in October.

Wish it were true, but I don't think it will even be true in November.

Have a wonderful trip, Frank! I'll join the others who would love to read a trip report. It may be difficult to completely avoid our political insanity, but at least it should be less intense. We're leaving for Italy in a few weeks and are also hoping for a bit of relief from it all. If only it would be all over in October . . .

Have a great time! I know we're all interested in your trip reports. We did a form of this Viking cruise about 5 years ago. We did some of the additional tours (extra$) and wished we'd done them all. The itinerary is a little different than when we went, but they offered a shopping g trip with the steward in Lyon and I wished we'd done that. On our stop in Lyon there was time to do a dinner in town and many people did that. We did do the Chateauneuf de Pape tour and that was excellent.

Bon voyage!! We're also running away from home to avoid at least some of the election craziness -- even unplugging the landline so we won't return to a full answering machine. Looking forward to your review of this cruise.

Have a good time, Frank. We're off to the UK next week, so I'll look for you in the pubs. And don't worry, the crazy political discussion will be going full blast when you return! ;-)

Now I've gotta go find ivyallover's post . . .

Buon viaggio. We'll all still be here when you get back! Always fun to read about someone else's trip to get more ideas for my ever-growing list. River cruise has been on the idea list for a couple of years now....

Like everyone else want to wish you a safe, happy journey. We will also want to hear about your river cruise, so many people are curious and hesitant about booking. The inside info you provide will help many make a decision.

I love your statement, "You know me - I try hard to live by the rule that you post what you know from experience rather than what you think you know from the web and other postings." Certainly a relief from another poster who pretends they travel in luxurious style, but really they never leave home; and copy Trip Advisor information for their posts. (And cut down Rick Steves tours, which is my beef with them.)
I will be especially interested in hearing how your London portion goes, since my husband and I spent three weeks in London and other locations in England in May 2016.
I will be interested to see what you do while in London. We found we wanted to go back to several places we had been to many times before. And I enjoyed sending postcards to some friends here on the Forum!
Don't blame you for getting away from the election talk. (Eye roll here.)

Frank,

Hope you have a wonderful trip and that it's everything you anticipated! Be sure to tell us all about it when you "break your silence".

I'm travelling now as well and although not "silent" I've been quieter than usual.

Happy travels!

It is always better in Europe especially at a sidewalk cafe.

We are back. A bit foggy today. As usual it was a terrific trip with no serious or even minor problems. Both the pound and euro stayed low. Lost over 10 pounds. Consumed 42 bottles of wine - mostly red. Were staying in the same area as Kim K when she lost her 10 millions. Wondered why all of a sudden there was this HUGE police presents - flak jackets, auto weapons, etc. Someone should introduce her to this site.

Have a number of observations that I will post separately. The river cruise far exceeded expectations so we booked another one for next year. The blue jean, sneakers of any color and style, flip flops, t-shirts discussion is truly dead. The Am chip and signature card worked fine everywhere. Our many European contacts are very concerned about our election - the remarks about NATO and Putin being a better leader has lots of traction with them. As usual did not see a single pickpocket. Lots of homeless or beggars on the streets of Paris. Global Entry at Dulles in DC probably saved two hours of line waiting.

Welcome back. Waiting to hear more details.

About entry at Dulles: we used the computers open to all US citizens and were through in 3-minutes. Global Entry is good, but to let people know that alternatives exist that will allow people to avoid the long line, too.

Following on Bets' comment about using the computers at Dulles, they were available at SFO too -- it was just the 100 people in line to use them. Mobile Passport app got us past that line and out quickly. Wondering how much better Global Entry would be. Probably all depends on what / how many flights came in right ahead of you.
Welcome back, Frank.

Welcome back, Frank! I know we're supposed to avoid political discussions here, but I'm always curious about what people in other countries think about the way we do things. My German friend was recently in St. Louis for a few days and I kept asking him to compare the way things work (or don't work) in Germany with the way things work (or don't work) here. I think he got a little annoyed toward the end of his visit!
