Global Entry renewal grace period extended

I saw an article that indicated that CBP has extended the renewal grace period period up to 24 months due to the backlog of interviews. This is confirmed on the CBP website. It states:

You become eligible to renew your membership one year prior to program expiration. If you submit a renewal application before your membership expires, you will be able to continue to use benefits up to 24 months after your membership expiration date, if your renewal does not get processed in time.

We renewed last year. It was fill out the form, update the travel schedule, and send in the money. Came back in a few weeks. From recent postings, are they now requiring an interview for renewal?

Frank, sometimes when you renew you have to interview and sometimes not. I don’t think anyone knows the criteria. It may be random.

When I renewed in 2017, the GE renewal was approved pretty quickly and no interview was required. As I am now on my 2nd renewal, I am wondering if an interview will be required this time.

Laura, sincere (and I do really mean SINCERE) thanks for posting this info.

Previously big travelers (as in sometimes 3 international trips a year), we just have not traveled in the last 4 years. Your post made us pull our Global Entry info to take a look....yep, expired.

We filled out the renewal on-line Sunday, and this morning we received our approvals.

Easy-peasy.

I call this our "toss of hope" that we might actually feel comfortable traveling again in the next few years...maybe. And, of course, Global Entry is only $15 more than TSA Pre-Check :)

So, again.....many, many thanks.

I've been using an app (Mobile Passport?) for reentry as an alternative to Global Entry. I finally decided to use Global Entry. The wait time to get an interview, however, is awful. I'm hoping, when I travel this year, I'll be able to interview when I get back to the U.S. If not, the fee, I already paid, isn't providing much utility this year.
