If he doesn't already subscribe, maybe a subscription to one or more travel magazines, like Conde Nast Traveler, Travel & Leisure, or National Geographic Traveler.

First find out what he has already, as most hardcore travelers are pretty well-equipped. I don't like having duplicates of things. I already have my favorites and don't need seconds or thirds.

Also, it doesn't hurt to ask what he doesn't have (but would like)...it doesn't have to be related to travel.

I've got a lot of use out of a vest with a lot of hidden pockets, ScotteVest. I think there are other brands. Do your homework, one reviewer compared their products to the famous puffy shirt.

The lovely hardcover book: National Geographic 500 Journeys of Lifetime.

Also include a little package of small sticky notes so he can put them on the pages that include places he has already visited/things he's already done.

My husband gave me the book for Christmas several years ago, and I love adding sticky notes. I also love looking up destinations I will be visiting to get ideas for things to do/places to see that I might have otherwise missed.

My husband is really into tiny travel wallets like this one so he can minimize and organize the day's cash and a CC to fit in a concealed pocket.

Or a nice lightweight bag like Osprey from Eagle Creek. Our new roll-a-boards only weigh 4 pounds. The day packs are great, too. And the packing cubes are super. My favorites of many I have tried.

A great travel adaptor for multiple countries is useful.

My cousin is a hard core traveller and I got her a scratch off map of the world. She can scratch off the countries that she has been to. She loves it!

I just got a Moleskin Passions Travel Journal which is great for both planning and recording trips. I really like mine!

A small pocket compass. My husband loved his.

Similar to a suggestion above - my daughter got us a personalized map from Nat Geo that was framed where we can indicate all the places (countries) we've been to

How about a gift certificate to a store where he might not normally shop for travel supplies

Does he have noise cancelling wireless headphones, such as Bose? They are fantastic!
