My family and my brother's family are travelling together with our mother to Poland. My mother was born in Pland 50 years ago(!), and has not been there since. Nor has she had much contact. We will be seeing some of our Polish relatives...does anyone have any suggestions for gifts we can bring them?
Well, it's especially hard if you've never met them or know their interests, but I think you'd be safe with things that represent Seattle. Maybe watercolors of some of the beautiful sites, or other locally made items that depict or represent Seattle. Seattle Seahawks shirts or hats would probably be appreciated by young men. (I spent quite a bit of time in Poland, often in non-touristy areas where I saw lots of Chicago Bears and Bulls wear, presumably given by Polish relatives in Chicago.) I think many people there know the Space Needle (I have friends there who love Grey's Anatomy, and there's always a shot of the Space Needle in each episode.), so Space Needle items might work. Maybe take a nice picture frame, and while you are there, take a family picture and have it developed and frame it. You can find just about everything there that we have here, but they don't have big crafts stores with shelf upon shelf of pretty but inexpensive frames. I hope you, your family, and especially your mom, have a wonderful time!
Being from Seattle as well and having travelled to Poland, I can say I wish you a great trip. Poland is a tremendous place to visit. I would suggest Market Spice Tea from the tea shop at Pike Place Market. It is unique, smells wonderful and is easy to pack. Culturally, tea is more widely consumed than coffee, (many drink instant) so it should at least get approving nods.
Ooooh, excellent suggestion, Darby! Tea is very popular in Poland; the tea aisles at the grocery stores there are like the cereal aisles here in the states:a mind-boggling selection. Seattle tea would be a great choice; I always think of coffee when I think of Seattle, but it makes sence that tea would be popular too.
There are many sights of interest in Seattle. I would suggest a book with photos of the city. Barnes and Noble probably has a wide choice. If the relatives have never been to the USA they would find your home town of interest.
