Last year while traveling I met a really great family in Athens, stayed in touch via email over the past year, and for my upcoming trip they will be hosting me for one week and then I'm sure they'll be supporting me in multiple ways as I work at my internship for a few months nearby. I would like to bring them a gift but I'm not sure what, as I don't know them THAT well. Unfortunately, I don't live in an area that is known for anything in particular (this would have been so much easier when I still lived in New Orleans). I'm stumped so any suggestions are most appreciated!!

North Carolina has nothing of interest? What about something from the Smokey Mountains, or something Cherokee? Something hand-made is good, or photographic.
Otherwise, just take them out to eat for dinner as a thank-you.

Jo- Let me clarify: NC is great! But in the small town I live in there is nothing in particular that we are known for. A more significant factor is the fact that I leave in 2 weeks and have put this off until the last minute. I've been thinking about some local art, but I also was just curious as to what other ideas might pop up on here. :-)

Jenessa- now Charlotte is NOT a small town (but maybe you live outside Charlotte proper- like Belmont or Mt. Holly???). Anyway.... why not take a special small basket of local nthings- pecans, peanuts, peach stuff like jam, candy, etc. There are several companies in Charlotte that do thinkgs like that such as: http://www.carolinabasketcreations.com/ http://www.ncgiftbaskets.com Or take a nice calendar or coffee table book with lovely pictures of NC- from the Blue Ridge Mts. to the Hatteras Lighthouse and the outter banks. Should be able to find several to choose from at Books A Million. If you are checking a bag you could take an assortment of differnt style BBQ sauces (include a western NC tomato one, an Eastern NC vinegar one andy maybe a mustard one). Then there are the Moravian cookies from Old Salem- get several flavors- black walnut, lemon, ginger and vanilla are traditional. And of course there are always college themed things- Duke and Carolina and State have PLENTY of things to choose from.
Then there is NASCAR- LOTS of things there!!! LOL!!!
