I am planning to take a day trip from Seville to Gibraltar and was wondering what the best way to do so is. I have looked into a day tour, but they seem expensive and don’t have the best reviews. The trains are 4 hours whereas a car is only 2 hours, so I was also considering a carpool company like bla bla car, but was unsure if it was safe/reliable since you can’t book far in advance. Let me know if anyone has taken a good tour or recommends bla bla car!
Please be patient with my reply.....................
It is a big rock.
If you have exhausted all other day trip possibilities I recommend a long siesta prior to visiting the big rock.
Am writing form experience.
I agree with the reply above!
The name has a ring to it... But there is little of substance there. If you want a day trip to the coast, Cádiz would be far more interesting!
If you think Gibraltar is "just a rock", you either haven't been, or didn't do the research to find all there is to see and do. Gibraltar was the highlight of a Mediterranean cruise I did several years ago:
- the rock itself provides a scenic cable car ride to the top, where you can see (and feed) the barbary apes, and get sweeping views over the straits and the city below;
- the Trafalgar cemetery, where the British graves from that famous naval battle are buried, is a leafy oasis, and a chance to learn about the Battle of Trafalgar which occurred nearby;
- St Michael's Cave is the best presented cave walk I've ever seen, with the stalactites and stalagmites all floodlit;
- if you're interested in WW2 history, there is the bunker where Eisenhower planned and supervised the Torch landings of North Africa in 1942;
- the town itself is just so quirky and unique. Is it British? The pubs and red letterboxes certainly seem so. Is it Mediterranean? The Spanish and Maltese names make it sound like it? I really enjoyed poking around the pubs and shops.
If you want to see Gibraltar, don't let "just a rock" fool you. Go, and enjoy it!
We did a day trip by rental car from Ronda. That's not the same distance, but it was a long ride (on excellent highways) but caught behind many trucks. I have no hesitation about a daytrip up to an hour, but this (over two hours) was not a good reward for the time invested. It's interesting, but not as rewarding as the space Rick's book devote to it would suggest. It's also a bit rushed as a loooong daytrip. It wasn't wasted time, but there are better things to do in Spain if your locations are more northerly.
For those who expect to eventually take a cruise, it's likely to be on the itinerary.
Totally agree with everything darren said. I really enjoyed my visit there. I don't think I would say it was BETTER than Seville or Ronda but if you have the time it's definitely worth it.
I stayed on a boat - the ‘Con Dios’, a boat moored in the Marina Bay (a leisure boat harbor). Booked it through booking.com and there were a number of boats that offered accommodation. It was actually quite comfortable, had a toilet and sink and there was shower access on the dock nearby that guests could use.

Researched it, been there, done that and................. to me...............just a rock.
As I initially said, "forgive me", but please tone down the "attitude" your comment projected.
Thanks!
I didn’t see any attitude in the various responses, just different points of views. I often find places that disappoint me can be someone else’s favorite.
I would love to see Gibraltar!
Full disclosure; I have spent over a month recently in Andalucia and felt no urge to go to Gibraltar, so I speak not from experience.
To me this comes down to how much time you have in the area. We see a lot of folks planning just 3 nights (occasionally only 2) in Seville, and I'm sure a third full day in Seville, or a fourth, is worth a great deal more than a day trip requiring six or so hours on the road with a pay-off of only a few hours in Gibraltar. A day or two in Cordoba is worth more than a trip to Gibraltar. A second full day in Granada is worth more than a day in Gibraltar. And so on.
When I lived in Spain in the mid-70s one couldn’t visit the rock since the Spanish were having a dispute with the Brits and had the border closed. The closest we got to it was right at the border. In the 90s we took our children to Spain and we did cross the runway, parked, and hired a driver to take us up the hill to see the monkeys. That satisfied my curiosity and doubt I’ll return. If you have the time and want to visit it, then by all means go, but I wouldn’t do it as a day trip from Sevilla. We’ve had a car each time we’ve been in that area.
Took 20 years ago the long distance bus from Algeciras to Sevilla. On the way to Tarifa the view of the Strait of Gibraltar with it’s ships and Africa at the background impressed me more than seeing “the rock”. But that’s my opinion. If Gibraltar keeps intriguing you, just go to it, maybe spending the night there can make the trip easier. Worth trying? Sometimes it pays off, sometimes not.
