Gibraltar cable car

Does anyone have any updates on when the cable car in Gibraltar? The most recent word was it will be going out of operation on 9/1 for maybe 2 years, but I also heard it could be delayed again.
We're planning a trip to Spain in October. So first question is if there's a definite date? Second one is if it's still worth going if the cable car is not running?
Thanks to all.

There doesn't seem to be any official information out there, but informal comments referring to closure end of September/October/November.
There is no doubt that the cable car is a great attraction, but there are good taxi tours with well-informed local drivers which take you to the top of the Rock and stop at major points of interest en route.
If you propose taking a tour, then visiting Gib is worth it. Otherwise, unless you are going to be passing anyway, I wouldn't bother.

We were just in Gibraltar. We used the cable car to go up, but we walked down. Walking was much more enjoyable, but I would still use the cable car to go up. The lineup was very long (about an hour) even though we bought tickets ahead of time. The lineup to get tickets would have been another hour on top of that, so definitely get tickets ahead of time.

I have no information about closure dates, but if the cable car is closed, I would still go to Gibraltar. It is a really cool place. Alternate route to the top would be to take a cab (although if the cable car is closed I would expect cabs to be very busy). Check when cruise ships will be in port and choose a time when there are no ships (or smaller ships). Ask your hotel to book a cab for you.

Even if you can't get to the top, there is still a lot to like about Gibraltar.

A note...Gibraltar uses British pounds, not euros, just in case you planned to use cash.

I was just there. They use both ubiquitously. Pounds officially, of course, and for the cable car. But half the stuff we saw was advertised in euros.
