Getting to the airport in Munich

We will be dropping the car off in downtown Munich on Nymphenburger Str. 61. We are going to spend the day in Munich, but need to get to the airport (probably will be spending the night in the airport because of early flight.) What is the best way to get to the airport?

You will probably be using public transportation to get around Munich anyway, so just buy a Gesamtnetz Partner Tageskarte (day pass for the entire network for up to 5 people) for 20,40€. It will cover all of your travel for the day on all forms of transit (S/U-Bahn, trams, and buses) in the Munich Metro area. You will probably want to start your tour of Munich in Marienplatz. From Nymphenburgerstr. 61, walk to the U-bahn station at Maillingerstr (ask at the car rental how to get there). Take the U1 in the direction of Mangfallplatz 3 stops to Sendlinger Tor. In the Sendlinger Tor station, change to the U6 (direction Garching) and go 1 stop to Marienplatz. From downtown Munich, take either S1 or S8 in the direction of the Flughafen (airport).

Thanks, Lee, I thought we would do a hop on/off tour. Then take bus or train to airport. Just not sure yet. Thanks for the info.

Hi, "Then take the bus or train to airport." Taking the bus to the airport is also another option. You can catch the "Lufthansa Airport Bus" at Munich Hbf. on the other side the station on Arnuftstraße, not Bayerstraße. The stop is front of the taxi station.

Looking at some of the hop on/off tours, they seem to include Schloß Nymphenburg, the art galleries (Pinakotheke), and a lot of things (Rathaus, Residenz, Viktualienmarkt, Hofbräuhaus) within walking distance of Marienplatz. At over $17 per adult, I think you can do better on your own. My suggestion would be to buy the Gesamtnetz Tageskarte for 20,40€. I think the art galleries would be too much for one day. Take the U1 2 stops to the Hbf and find a locker for your luggage, then take the streetcar (17, north side of the Hbf) out to Schloß Nymphenburg and see it. After Nymphenburg, come back on the streetcar to the Hbf and take any S-Bahn to Marienplatz. In Marienplatz, see the Rathaus, then walk to the Hofbräuhaus, enjoy some beer and a meal, then visit the Viktualienmarkt. Return to the Hbf, pick up your luggage and take either the S1 or the S8 to the airport. If you take the S1, board the back of the train; the front half goes to Freising. Better yet, find a place to spend the night in Freising (far more economical than at the airport. That night, eat at Weihenstephen, the oldest brewery in the world. In the morning the bus from Freising Bhf takes about 20 min and cost 2,60€/person.
