Is it possible to get from Assissi to Ravenna quickly and easily by train? Or bus? Do you have to backtrack to Rome?

By bus, I'm not sure what options you may have off the top of my head.. I don't think there's a direct line..
In terms of train travel though, your best bet would be to catch Eurostars with a connection in Foligno. This would take about 3 hours and 15 min.. Your next best option would be the regional trains with one or two connections, totaling about 5 hours+ of travel. You can check out the train schedules at the Tren Italia website listed below.
