We are a family of 5 (3 teenage children - I know) and we are going to be leaving Sorrento to go to Rome for 3 days. We'd love your advice on the best way to get there. I do have private transfer as an option given we don't have much time and it's our one and only holiday. I must also say that many years ago I did not love being at Naples Train station but could get over that if train is the best option.

The best option is always a private driver. Door to door, private pick up, etc. However the train is very workable and fast. We have been through the Naples train station a number of times with no problems any worse than any other big train station in Italy. There is a direct bus a couple times a day from Sorrento but I don't remember the schedule.
That direct bus is Marrozi, and it takes 3 hours and 45 minutes from Sorrento to Roma Autostazione Tiburtina station. The website is only in Italian:
