We will be traveling from the US to Dublin, then Berlin. At the end of our time in Berlin, we want to go to Rothenburg ob de Tauber. I plan to rent a car to get there, and have already reserved a room there. My question is, what is the best way to get from there to Edinburgh. We want to spend the last of our few days in Europe in Scotland and Ireland ( we will fly out of Dublin). Is there a train from there or should I fly? Should I fly out of Munich or Nuremberg? Thank you so much. This is only my second time going to Europe, and it is my first time being entirely responsible for all the planning. We are taking a trip to celebrate my daughter's college graduation.
A train from Rothenberg odT to Edinburgh? Pretty sure that would require quite a few train changes and likely a couple of days. Also pretty sure there aren't any direct flights between Nuremberg and Edinburgh. For that you'd need to drive to Frankfurt or Munich.
This is for most people too far by train, it would need at least one overnight stop.
As for flying, this is how I would approach the problem (teach a man to fish . . . .):
- Go to the Wikipedia article for Edinburgh airport, look for the section "Airlines and Destinations" (here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Edinburgh_Airport#Airlines_and_destinations ). Look in that list for any airports near Rothenburg ob der Tauber.
- Easyjet - Berlin-Tegel, Munich
- Lufthansa - Frankfurt, Munich
- Ryanair - Berlin–Schönefeld
- Great, Easyjet flies from Munich. This is a budget airline, which probably means Lufthansa on the same route is also cheap, as they have to compete. Look up flights on both airline websites to find one that fits your times and budgets.
- Drive from Rothenburg ob der Tauber to Munich airport, and drop off your car there.
Yes, Munich is the obvious international airport to use. Make sure you don't get a Ryanair flight from the airport they refer to as "Munich-Memmingen", which is barely even in Bavaria.
What am I missing? From the map and the train schedules it appears that it takes less time to get to the Frankfurt airport than the Munich airport. On the random day I checked (a Wednesday), there were two non-stops from Frankfurt (though nothing during the middle of the day) and none from Munich.
You’re not missing anything! I on the other hand, should never post late at night ! ☺️I meant to say Frankfurt or Munich! I had just been reading about Nuremberg and I guess my tired brain typed it out! Sorry! Thank you for all your kind and helpful replies!
At the risk of upending your entire travel plan, is your hotel in Rothenburg refundable?
Because Berlin to Rothenburg is quite a journey when there are similarly wonderful places a lot closer to Berlin, which would enable you to fly out of Berlin and spend less time in transit...
