We're thinking of leaving our tour group for a day to see the Neuschwanstein Castle. We can take the train from Lucerne to Fussen and do the tour. We then need to line up a ride or way to get to Innsbruck from there. Any experiences with this or suggestions? Know of any private driver to do this?
I know of no private driver, not do I think it will be economically feasible. It's 110 km each way be car and I think any driver would want to be paid for the round trip. By train it will take about 4 hours. You can either go via Munich. That route is entirely by train, or you can take the bus to Reutte and the train from there via the Ausserfernbahn to Garmisch-Partenkirchen and from there via Mittenwald and Seefeld to Innsbruck. The Seefeld route would be more scenic.
You can take a string of three Austrian buses through the Tirol in 3Hr 5Min.
