Getting Emergency Cash If Your Debit Card Goes Missing

This may be old news to old hands here, but I just asked my bank (Bank of America) what recourse I'd have if I lost a debit card overseas. Perhaps, I thought, I could get a replacement card at a local bank with which they were affiliated

Well, it's "No" on the card replacement. But, they did add this:

"Please note that as a Visa member and valued Bank of America Check Card
holder, you are able to receive emergency cash disbursements. This
service entitles Visa customers worldwide to emergency cash services 24
hours a day, 365 days a year. If properly authorized, customers can
receive up to $1,500 in emergency cash."

To be "properly authorized", you need to report a lost, stolen or damaged card and order a replacement card; you need to be away from home or traveling within 72 hours; you must present a need for the cash; and the amount availabe is $150 -$1500.

They provide a phone number to call collect from outside the U.S. You can be sure I'll take it with me.

They do not explain what "Visa member" means. I don't know if that means someone who has a BofA Visa credit card (I do) or simply has a BofA check card with the Visa logo (I do).

Nor do they explain the mechanism for delivering the cash, or if the cash is debited from your account, etc.

In any case, it's good to know if worse comes to worse. BofA can't be the only bank doing this, so ask yours.

I asked the same question today to a Wells Fargo rep. He didn't mention anything about a cash dispersement option - just that I could get a new card in 5 to 7 business days (longer if I wanted it overseas). Guess BofA is a bit more progressive...

He did say to bring a backup card, like a Visa or Mastercard credit card...which I plan to do, since it doesn't look like I can get a cash disbursement - except maybe from my parents...

I didn't lose my card, but had it refused one day in Italy. Just some screwup (it worked fine at another bank's ATM), but after that I opened a second account at a different bank and carry two ATM cards. I have had one card or the other refused at least once on every trip I have taken, but never both.

My credit card and debit card, along with the $20.00 in US cash I had withme were stolen in France. Passport and drivers license too. I filed a police report and called my banks. My credit card company wired $1,000 to a bank in AVignon. (we were staying about 30minutes outside of the city.) We didnt have to show ID to pick up the money. My debit card is thru Commerce bank and they overnight expressed a replacement to me at the hotel we were staying in France. The only problem was that express mail service in France was on strike so I didnt get the card until 48 hours later. We replaced our passports 3 weeks later when we arrived in Paris. My advise, have copies of the front and back of all your cards, Identification and passport in case this happens. My sister did not and she had a much harder time replacing everything and contacting her banks. Also, contact your banks and get a number that works outside the US. WE still had a great trip and feel we can handle anything now!
