Germany/Austria/Prague

Hi everyone,

I will be heading to Europe in May. The only thing that has been booked so far is the round trip airfare out of Munich. I was wondering if I could get some feedback on the itinerary below. Any help or advice is much appreciated!

Tuesday, May 12: We land around 1:05 Local Time. Rest up a bit, explore the city once rested up in the evening.

Wednesday, May 13: Guided day trip to Nuremberg (10 hours). Hang out in Munich in the evening.

Thursday, May 14: Explore Munich during the day and out in Munich in the evening.

Friday, May 15: Dachau in the morning, explore more of Munich upon return. Train to Salzburg in early evening and stay in Salzburg.

Saturday, May 16: Rent car out of Salzburg or take guided day trip to see Hitler’s Eagle’s Nest and various other spots in the Bavarian Alps Berchtesgaden region. Stay in Salzburg.

Sunday, May 17: Use day to visit Hallstatt, explore more of Salzburg if time in evening. Stay in Salzburg.

Monday, May 18: Travel day to Prague, plan to take train (7 – 8 hours) from Salzburg to Prague. Hotel: Prague City Center

Tuesday, May 19: Spend time exploring Prague

Wednesday, May 20: Spend time exploring Prague

Thursday, May 21: Look into day trip from Prague (e.g., Cesky Krumlov, Kutna Hora)

Friday, May 22: Train back to Munich from Prague, hang out in Munich if time in evening

Saturday, May 23: Fly back at 2:05 Local Time.

Thank you!
Joey

Your two possibilities for Prague day trips are very different lengths. Day trip to Cesky Krumlov will take around 8 hours, whereas Kutna Hora is only 4 hours.

I see you are going to some WWII sites. Theresienstadt (close to town of Terezin) is another day trip possibility from Prague.

I think you really aren't giving yourself any time for Salzburg itself.

It is not necessary to rent a car to get to Berchtesgaden. You can take a bus easily.

We did not visit Kutna Hora, but IMO Cesky Krumlov is not worth the time. You may want to consider a day trip to Terezin from Prague. Our tour with Pavel Batel was incredibly insightful and will be very different from what you see and learn about Dachau. He is a wealth of knowledge and a fabulous guide who does book up quickly if that is something that interests you. https://terezin-private-tours.com/ We spent two nights in Hallstatt and enjoyed visiting Dachstein, but since you only have time for a day trip there, I would opt to stay in Salzburg as there is much to explore there. The city does have quite a few Stolpersteine brass remembrance plaques scattered throughout.

Thanks for the feedback so far. I know it doesn’t leave much time for Salzburg itself, but that may just have to be a sacrifice that is made.
