Germany and Austria in March

We will be travelling to Germany (Munich, Neuschanstein) and Austria (Salzburg, Innsbruck, Vienna) the second week of March. What kind of weather should we expect?

In Austria in the spring, particularly in Salzburg, it seems to rain for at least a few minutes every day. I lived there as a student and never went out without an umbrella. Temperature-wise, it will be cooler than you are used to in spring (but it was just about the same as spring in Illinois).

I agree with Nancy. I believe you will find weather much like we have here in March. No one can predict rain or even the incursion of a cold front. Just be prepared for cool weather.

Munich is farther north than Quebec, Canada, in terms of latitude! That surprises some people. Because of the northernly location of southern Germany and Austria and the fact that they are distant from the moderating influence of the English channel and Atlantic Ocean, the typical weather in southern Germany and Austria in March will likely be significantly cooler than the typical March weather you're used to in Georgia--I'm speaking in terms of long-term averages, of course, the weather in any particular year can vary significantly one way or the other.

expect cold and snowy/rainy and be pleasantly surprised (and prepared) in case you get any warm/cool bursts.

March is still part of the winter sports season in the Alps, so expect cold to cool weather.

According to RS Germany and Austria, back of book, pg 644 in 2007 edition, the average high temp in Munich in March is 48 deg F, and the average low is 30 deg F. March averages 18 day without rain.

But, of course, that's average. YMMV. And Füssen, Salzburg, and Innsbruck are at the edge of, or in, the mountains.

I was there in late March/early April this year, and Germany was cool with some sunshine, but Salzburg was cold, snowing most of the time.

That just shows how futile it is to try to guess. When I lived there, we had no snow past mid March, just rain.

Thanks so much for your help. I guess we should pack for cold weather and rain and, perhaps, snow.

I'll be in that area at the same time in 2009! Since we are living out of a backpack and are washing our clothes on the go, my beau and I are purchasing heavyweight silk thermal underwear from wintersilks.com. They have very reasonable prices. Silk dries quickly, so we can wash overnight. On top of our silks, we'll be wearing quick-dry travel pants...and remember, if you are terribly cold or warm, just buy something in Europe!

So, with our silk underwear and some reasonable layering, we'll be ready to go! (We hope) Happy travels!
