German Hotel Booking

Looking online I see Hotels may be quoting rates in PHP...looking at the monetary code it says PHP. What is PHP? How do I figure that in US dollars.

In over 10 years of booking Hotels, Pensionen, Privatezimmer (over 50 properties) in Germany online, I have NEVER seen anything quoted in "PHP". What website are you looking at? . . . . . ¶ PHP are Philippine Pesos! I have never seen a German website quote in PHP. If you are using a booking website, be aware than in major cities, the rates they offer might not be any better than what you can get at the properties directly. Outside major cities, their selektion is .... really, really bad - only a few of the most expensive places, often miles away from where you wanted to be. Booking hotels on a booking website is like booking individual tickets on RailEurope.

Pat, as Lee mentioned, I've also NEVER seen any rates quoted as "PHP". Could you provide links for the websites you've been using? You might want to check your local Library to see if they have copies of the "Germany" Guidebooks, as the rates there are all listed in Euros.

If you are referring to hotels.com there is a tab in the upper left corner that allows you to select the currency you want quotes in. One of these in PHP but you can reset it to whatever you would prefer.

I like to use www.hrs.com for booking hotels as I can get a per night rate and not just a per person rate. You can switch the currency to whatever you like, GBP, euro or dollar. You can also find out the amenities that are included like A/C or breakfast, wi-fi, etc.

I've used hrs.com on Jo's recommendation, and really liked the site. What I liked best was that you didn't have to pay for the room when you booked it OR give a credit card number, the room was guaranteed until 6pm without it.

Last August I spent a night in Freilassing, in a perfectly acceptable hotel. The room was clean and well maintained and had it's own bath. Breakfast was abundant. There was no front desk, the rooms were at the back of the restaurant, which was closed that day, but I had my own key to the outside. I paid €35 for a single room with breakfast included. The place is not shown on HRS; in fact, the least expensive place nearby on HRS was €49 for a single, Ü/F. So, if your objective is to "build a wall between you and what you came to see", HRS (any booking website) is a good start.

Just a guess...could this rate that is quoted as PHP mean Person Halbpension? or Per Halbpension? which would mean half board? Can you be more specific like the hotel's website so we could check? r

Lee, I just looked on hrs and they have multiple hotels, pensions, etc. listed for a single with breakfast starting at 28 euro. In fact there were 15 places that cost 35 euro and under. Granted, I was looking at dates for next week, but still. Maybe you should give it another look?

My first look was for a month from now; I rarely book later than that. And I used a distance of 3 miles. . . . . ¶ After a second look, for next week and for no limit on distance, I did find places, more like about 20. The closest one was 12 miles from Freilassing! Those inexpensive ones averaged 23 miles away. . . . . . . ¶ Which brings up another complaint I have about HRS (all booking sites). I've put in towns and the closest property they show is 10-15 miles away, and much more expensive. And yet I actually stayed in that town. I know there are places in that town, but they act like there isn't anything there. Which is why I said booking with them is like buying point-point tickets from RailEurope.

I was curious to see what hotels in Prague and some towns in Germany were running. To get that PHP...go to www.sidestep.com and click on hotels and then put in Prague. See if you get a very large number with a P (with three lines through it) down at the bottom they say we quote in PHP??? I guess everyone else is as in the dark as I was. Pat

"go to www.sidestep.com and click on hotels and then put in Prague. See if you get a very large number" . . . . . . ¶ I get a very large number but it has USD in front of it. I can't find anyway to displayed currency. If I were interested in these properties I would want to see the prices in Euro, anyway. I can't find anyway to change the currency. Is that possibly a part of a user profile? Are you a member? When you log on do you see a way to change the parameters?

I think I have partially figured this out...it must have been a glitch in sidestep's site. The hotels in Prague and Bavaria were quoting me in Phillipine Peso's...who know's why...like I say, has to be a glitch as I live in the US. Thanks for the help Pat
