Generali Global Assistance Insurance

I am traveling to Europe and deciding on what travel insurance to get and would like some input from seasoned travelers. I am looking at two Companies primarily right now.

Travelguard AND
Generali Global Assistance

Generali Global seems like the rates are lower and the reviews of travelers are positive (I always look at reviews of those that have made claims).

Would like to have input from other travelers on what they have experienced with either of these insurance companies.

We have used Travel Guard many times.
We had to cancel international trips twice and Travel Guard paid our claims in full within a month’s time. We submitted all the necessary paperwork with our claims.
Make sure you obtain the necessary paperwork
when you cancel a trip such as doctor and hospital bills to submit with your claims.

I ‘ve used Generali Global Insurance and also had CSA Insurance policies before Generali bought CSA several years ago. Both highly-rated, Generali Global Assistance offers great policies with generous coverages for medical emergencies that extend to cover the expenses of everyone in a travel group that might be impacted by a medical emergency.
For example, if you incur an injury like a sprained ankle and cannot continue your trip- not only will you be able to be treated at a hospital and be covered for expenses to return home early— your travel partner will also be covered to return home with you.
They also would cover additional expenses during Covid in the event you tested positive and had to isolate for a week in a hotel before you were cleared to fly home.

Any nonrefundable travel expenses would also be covered, up to the limits of the policy.
This is in addition to the usual coverages for trip delay/interruption, lost luggage etc.
While I have not needed to file a claim, I’m confident in the solid reputation of Generali.

So I called Generali Global Assistance and they said that any hospital bills (and pre-existing only covered on best plan) must be paid by patient when in the country and then reimbursed. I want a plan that will pay my hospital bills and I do not have to pay first as if very sick it is not realistic not to have that coverage while there. Now, my story is that I had a heart attack May of 2023 while in Crete while hiking up a mountain. I had no previous heart issues and wound up in intensive care in Chania Greece (horrible hospital) for a week. I gave my insurance information that I had on me and they contacted the insurance and I did not pay any money up front nor did I pay to be medevaced home. But, on the day I was to leave, somehow my insurance had asked for some information that they needed to authorize payment. The hospital never sent the info and insurance never authorized payment and the hospital would not release me. I wound up being there well into the evening. That was with insurance coverage. I fear what would happen if I had to pay and somehow payment did not come through. I need a plan where hospitalization, if necessary, is covered. Understand I am fine now, no heart issues but having gone through that, I know what it can be like to get that kind of care in another country and what can happen.

I will not go with Generali Global and will check now with Travelguard what their policy is.

For the medical aspect of it Allianz will make payments direct to certain clinics whith whch they have arrangments. The list inlcudes clinics and some hospitals in most every major city in Europe. I use them and they have always paid the bill for me.

If you find another company that will do this sort of thing. Please post it. Would be nice to have choices.

Good luck (especially with Travel Guard). Almost all policies for travelers require you to pay first and get reimbursed later from the insurance company. Since most Europeans have free or highly subsidized health care for their citizens, hospitals getting paid directly from travel insurance companies is unusual.

I called travel guard and in those instances the patient gives the hospital the insurance information and usually the hospital contacts the insurance company and they send a guarantee of payment. Generali Global will not do that from what I understand. In my instance I did not get any copies of bills or anything.
